Carbondale, IL – Austin Peay State University track and field will head into a well-earned off-week on a high note after a fantastic finish at the Don DeNoon Invitational, hosted by Southern Illinois.
The Govs tied with SEC powerhouse Ole Miss for third, accruing 45 team points over the two-day event. Host Southern Illinois emerged victorious at 111.5 points overall.
Saturday’s action was concentrated primarily on the track, where the Governors were able to pick up a number of top finishes.
Freshman Lennex Walker, who tabulated points Friday in the long jump, aided the Governors cause once more in Saturday’s action, finishing sixth in the 60m dash (7.86, after qualifying with a personal-best 7.79 mark) and 60m hurdles (9.25) to pick up points for Austin Peay.
Freshman Denia Hill-Tate just missed qualification in the 60m hurdle finals, finishing seventh overall with a 9.20 mark in the preliminary round—less than two-tenths of a second from a qualifying time, and hampered by running a prelim against just two other runners, who finished with two of the six slowest overall times.
Another heat winner, sophomore Tymeitha Tolbert, picked up a spare point for the Govs in the 200m dash with a personal-best 26.24 mark.
The intermediate distances were kindest to the Govs in Saturday’s competition. Freshman Sabrina Richman placed third in the 400m with a personal-best 57.58 mark, while sophomore Amelia Thiesing won the event’s second heat with a 57.99 mark, placing fourth overall.
The duo, along with senior Allysha Scott and freshman Allana Johnson, capped the event for Austin Peay with an impeccably run 4x400m relay. The quartet picked up a third-place, 4:02.17 mark in the event for the Govs.
The Govs will take a two-week break before returning to action February 16th at the Ohio State Last Chance—their final meet before the 2018 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Charleston, Illinois.
