Clarksville Police Officers Shot at after attempting Traffic Stop

Clarksville Police Department - CPDClarksville, TN – On January 3rd, 2018, around 4:55pm, Clarksville Police Officers attempted a traffic stop in the area of Circle Drive when the tag on a maroon Blazer did not come back registered to the vehicle. The vehicle fled from the officers when the traffic stop was initiated.

It was later found behind a house on Woody Hills Drive. Officer Hudgin approached the vehicle, he heard voices, and started to yell verbal commands, at which time, Jason Evitts, appeared from the corner of the house with his hands up. When Evitts was told to get on the ground, he complied and was handcuffed by Officer McLaughlin.

Officer Hudgin noticed movement from the driver side of the vehicle and started to tell the person to show his hands. He heard the distinct sound of a slide on a gun being racked and then heard shots being fired from the direction of the Blazer.

He returned fire and the man started to run down a hill into the woods. A perimeter was set up and when K-9 Officer Mefford arrived with Police Service Dog Leo, and a track was started to look for the subject in the woods.

The suspect identified as Levi West came out and surrendered to Police without incident. Two handguns and a knife were recovered from the scene.

Additionally, it was determined during the investigation, West had been firing a handgun in the direction of the officers

The two men were taken in custody around 5:10pm and booked into the Montgomery County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be pending.

Levi Louis West, 34, was charged with: Aggravated Assault X 2, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Evading Arrest, Driving on Suspended or Revoked License x3, Reckless Driving, and Driving an Unregistered Vehicle. His bond is set at $248,500.

West has an extensive criminal history involving assault, robbery, and aggravated burglary. He is already on state probation.

Jason Ray Evitts, 38, was charged with: Unlawful Possession of Firearm. His bond is set at $50,000. Evitts has an extensive criminal history involving Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping, Theft, Burglary and Aggravated Burglary. He is already on state probation.
