APSU Tennis’ Lidia Yanes Garcia named OVC Player of the Week

APSU Women's TennisClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis student-athlete Lidia Yanes Garcia earned the adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Tennis Player of the Week award, as announced Wednesday by the league office.

Yanes Garcia has shown why she is the two-time reigning OVC Player of the Year, compiling a 6-0 record at No. 1 singles this season.

Yanes Garcia was the lone Governor to win both single matches this past weekend, defeating Louisville’s Alexsandra Mally (7-5, 6-1) and IUPUI’s Valeriia Lavrenchuk (6-2, 6-0).

The Govs have been shorthanded this year due to an injury and it meant Yanes Garcia had to adjust to a new partner at No. 1 doubles. Yanes Garcia and freshman Fabienne Schmidt have never played together in doubles, but have rolled to a 5-1 overall record at No. 1 doubles this season.

“Lidia has obviously been playing good tennis,” said Governors head coach Ross Brown. “I expected her to win at Louisville and she did just that. She is just extremely coachable and works hard every day to improve.”

“Lidia’s play this season has been as consistent as her play in her two previous seasons here,” said Governors assistant coach Maria Sorbello. “She continues to play at a high level this season, which we all expect from her.”

The Govs play this weekend, with an 11:00am, Sunday match at Kennesaw State. Govs fans can see Yanes Garcia in action at home next Wednesday, March 7th, against Saint Louis.
