A jubilant Austin Peay squad picked up its first victory since the 2014 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, finishing with a three-round total of 863 (284-299-280) thanks to a blistering final round that ended with three Govs in the top-10 overall.

It’s Austin Peay’s first win outside of its home tournament and course since taking the 2013 Harmony Preserve Intercollegiate in Melbourne, Florida.

“These guys learned so much from being in the hunt two weeks ago in Savannah,” Wilson said. “They’ve all been playing pretty good lately, so it’s no surprise, but coming from 10 strokes back against a very good Toledo team was a challenge. Our players weren’t afraid and when it came time, they stepped up in a big way.”

The final day belonged to sophomores Austin Lancaster and Alex Vegh, who erased the Governors 10-shot deficit heading into the day just with their performances. Lancaster shot five under-par on the day and for the tournament, finishing with a 211 (70-74-67) that had him just one shot behind Florida Gulf Coast’s Cole Castro, who was individual champion. He birdied four straight on Holes 4-7—one of just six birdies at Hole No. 4 for the entire third round—as the Govs mounted their comeback.

As good as Lancaster was, Vegh did him even better, shooting a six-under 66—the best by a Governor since Chris Baker‘s opening-round 66 at the 2015 Derek Dolenc Invitational—and shooting up the leaderboard, from 38th into a tie for fourth with a 215 (71-78-66). His day included three straight birdies on Holes 5-7 and a clutch eagle on the par-5 at No. 14.

Both Lancaster and Vegh posted their career-low round on Tuesday.

Sophomore Michael Busse was two-over for the day but maintained his spot in the top-10, finishing ninth with a 216 (70-72-74). While Lancaster and Vegh went low all over the place, Busse was a model of consistency, parring 12 of 18 holes.

Freshmen Chase Korte and Jay Fox rounded out the historic day for the Governors, with Fox’s 73 in the final round putting Austin Peay in excellent position; he finished with a 234 (78-83-73), while Korte’s consistent play kept him at 224 (73-75-76).

“Alex and Austin hit some of the biggest shots of their careers over the last five holes,” Wilson said. “Mike’s 15-footer for par on No. 17 was clutch. Chase and Jay didn’t have their best stuff but they absolutely played their hearts out.”

The Govs will be able to rest, relax and savor their victory for an extra few days before heading back out into competition at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, March 18th-19th, at Sevierville Golf Club.
