APSU Beach Volleyball defeats Lincoln Memorial, Huntingdon at Carson-Newman Tournament

APSU Women's VolleyballJefferson City, TN – Austin Peay State University beach volleyball team ended their losing streak in dramatic fashion with two wins at the Carson-Newman Tournament, Friday.

The Govs struggled in the early pairings against Lincoln Memorial University, but were able to find a rhythm in the third pair, carrying that energy to three-straight two-set wins in the final three games as the Governors took the matchup 3-2.

Haley Turner and Jenna Panning got the Govs rolling with a strong showing, topping Rylee Storms and Erica Whiteaker of Lincoln Memorial 21-17, 21-19. Ashley Slay and Cori Theiss continued Austin Peay’s run, beating Danielle Stachura and Kai Wesemann 21-13, 21-17.

Chloe Stitt and Kaylee Taff secured the Governors’ win with a dominant victory over Beka Wachob and Tone Gill 21-15, 21-7, snapping Austin Peay’s seven-match losing streak.

The Govs returned to the court early in the afternoon, but showed no signs of weakness against Huntingdon College, as Austin Peay swept all six pairings in the final matchup of the day.

It was Ginny Gerig and Cecily Gable who got the Govs started, winning in straight sets against Emily Fedonczak and Nichole Lefevre, 21-18, 21-19. Brooke Moore and Caroline Waite left Huntingdon seeing double with a 21-11, 21-11 victory in the number two pairing, while Turner and Panning had the most commanding victory of the afternoon, topping Lexie DeVuvst and Shelby McAllister 21-15, 21-7.

Austin Peay continued their two-set streak as Slay and Theiss added to their win total with a 21-14, 21-15 victory, while Stitt and Taff secured the Govs sweep with a 21-19, 21-15 win over Amy Tyma and Kaitlyn Carter. Nina Korfhage and Cori Theiss also picked up a win in the sixth exhibition pairing taking the first set 21-19, before winning nail biter 25-23.

The Governors will wrap up the Carson-Newman Tournament 12:30 p.m., Saturday.
