Old Hickory, TN – Although the Govs took the week off as a team, a quartet of Austin Peay State University men’s golfers got some work in at the Phoenix Invitational, hosted by Cumberland at Old Hickory Country Club.
All four finished in the top-20 of the 60-player field, with freshman Jay Fox taking runner-up honors thanks to a one-over par 143 (71-72); the Springfield, TN native led the Govs in par-3 (3.00/hole), par-4 (4.14/hole) and par-5 (4.67/hole) scoring, turning in seven birdies and 23 pars over the two-day, 36-hole event.
Elsewhere for the Govs, junior Sean Butscher and senior Hunter Tidwell finished just outside the top-10, tying for 11th with matching 150 (78-72 for Butscher; 74-76 for Tidwell) scores. Freshman Garrett Whitfield also got in his first work of the spring with 19th-place 153 (75-78).
The squad gets back to work next week as March turns to April—the month of the Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Golf Championship. The Govs begin the final stretch at the Red Wolves Intercollegiate, hosted by Arkansas State at Ridgepointe Country Club in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
