APSU Women's TennisNashville, TN – Three members of Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team were honored by the Ohio Valley Conference, highlighted by Lidia Yanes Garcia earning an unprecedented third straight OVC Player of the Year award, as announced Thursday by the league office.

Yanes Garcia, who was also named to her third consecutive First-Team All-OVC, is the first player in conference history to be named Player of the Year three times.

Austin Peay has now won the Player of the Year award 11 times, extending its conference record for most Player of the Year awards. Yanes Garcia is an incredible 16-2 in dual matches, mainly at No. 1 singles, this spring.

She went on a 16-match win streak as well, the second highest streak in Austin Peay history, only behind former standout Vanja Tomic, who won 20 straight over the course of two seasons in 2010 and 2011. Yanes Garcia also excelled in doubles, despite playing with three different partners this spring.

Overall, Yanes Garcia was 16-8 in doubles with an 11-6 dual record, including an 8-4 record at No. 1 doubles.

Fabienne Schmidt capped off her first regular season with the Govs in some style, winning OVC Freshman of the Year and being named First-Team All-OVC. Schmidt joins Yanes Garcia (2015) and Carolin Weikard (2010) as one of three Govs to win Freshman of the Year. APSU now joins UT Martin as the two schools who have produced the most Freshman of the Year award winners. Schmidt has been a revelation for the Govs, mainly playing at No. 2 singles and going 14-4 in dual singles matches, along with an impressive 7-2 OVC record. Schmidt and Yanes Garcia formed a formidable duo at No. 1 doubles, going 8-3 overall. Schmidt finishes the regular season with a 14-6 overall record at doubles, going 10-5 this spring across all positions and partners.

Helena Kuppig was also honored by the OVC for her outstanding season, as she was named Second-Team All-OVC. Kuppig mainly played at No. 3 singles this spring, going 11-3 at the position and 12-6 overall in dual singles matches. She also provided the clinching point in three of Austin Peay’s first four wins of the season. In doubles, Kuppig played at all positions, but usually stuck with partner Ana Albertson. The duo went 8-8 overall in doubles.

The Govs start postseason play in the opening round of the OVC Tournament, 3:00pm, Friday against UT Martin at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville, TN.
