Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett kicked off the event on the Historic Courthouse stairs. “Our new state litter motto is ‘Nobody Trashes Tennessee,” so the next time you see someone littering you tell them, Nobody Trashes Tennessee! Thank you for volunteering and special thanks to the Budweiser Team for having 53 volunteers here and for their regularly scheduled clean-up efforts on several of our roadways. Last year, less than half this staircase was full and today there are not enough stairs. Thanks again for coming out everyone!”

“We’ve had fantastic participation this year,” stated Mary Anderson, coordinator of the event and Bi-County Assistant Director of Administration and Education.

Anderson attributed the exceptional turnout to taking the time to make personal calls to businesses along with regular communication efforts from the Chamber of Commerce, Bi-County, the CMC Green Certification Program, Montgomery County as well as individuals sharing the event on social media.

Keep TN Beautiful Coordinator Stine Moss-Copperwood said, “When Mary told me more than 400 people signed up to participate in Montgomery County, I just had to drive up from Memphis to be a part of it. I was very impressed to see so many volunteers, meet so many wonderful people, and witness such great community spirit.”

Organizations that participated in the effort included: Altra Federal Credit Union, Boost Mobile, Bridgestone Metalpha, Budweiser of Clarksville, Century 21 Platinum, Chartwell’s Catering, Clarksville Pediatric Dentistry, CMCSS Middle College, Daymar College, Dunn Insurance, F&M Bank, Frontier Basement, Legends Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Home Instead Senior Care Center, Journey’s Eye, Merrill Home Improvement, Montgomery County Juvenile, Mullins Lawn Enforcement, Mount Olive Cemetery Historical Society, Premier Medical Group, Q Realty, Reliant Realty, Shiloh Industries, Strategic Financial Partners, Sunrise Rotary Club, Team Corinthia Elder for Trustee, Team Green for Congress Team, Team Hodges for State Representative, Two Rivers Company, Tennova Medical Center, Tree of Life, US Bank as well as individuals.

Saturday, April 28th was the official kick-off date for the Great American Clean-up but anyone interested in cleaning up a specific area of the community should contact Mary Anderson, who will supply gloves and trash bags through litter grant funds. If you decide to take on a clean-up effort, please contact Mary Anderson mcanderson@mcgtn.net so she can add your efforts to the database which helps our community secure grants for litter and recycling efforts.

Much of the trash consisted of cigarette butts that never break down and often end up in the waterways. Cigarette butts should always be put out and thrown in the trash, never on the ground.

Tennessee Department of Transportation spends more than 15 million dollars each year to clean up litter on Tennessee roads. For more information about litter and the “Nobody Trashes Tennessee” campaign, visit www.nobodytrashestennessee.com
