APSU Softball earns first National Post-Season Tournament Bid with National Invitational Softball Championship selection

APSU SoftballFort Collins, CO – Austin Peay State University’s softball team continues to make history this Spring by earning selection into the National Invitational Softball Championship, as announced Sunday night by the NISC Selection Committee.

It is the first national postseason appearance by the Governors (39-17) in the program’s 33-year history, after posting school bests with a second-place finish during the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season and a third-place finish in the conference’s championship tournament.

The Governors, who enter the tournament with a RPI of 78 in the nation, will be the number-two seed in Region 3 — hosted by fellow OVC member Eastern Kentucky — and will face Towson (40-17, 85 RPI) at 2:00pm (CT) Thursday, while Toledo (34-21, 121 RPI) and Eastern Kentucky (40-18, 76 RPI) will be on the other side of the bracket.

The regional runs through May 19th, with the regional winner advancing to the tournament’s championship round May 23rd-26th, at a yet to be determined site.

Overall, the double-elimination tournament consists of 17 teams, in four regions, that were either automatic qualifiers or at-large selections.

The other regions/teams are:

Region 1 (at Greeley, CO) South Dakota State, Colorado State, Northern Colorado and Loyola Marymount.

Region 2 (at Las Vegas, NV) Weber State, Nevada, Utah State, UC Riverside, UNLV.

Region 4 (Conway, AR) Stephen F. Austin, Texas Tech, Central Arkansas, UT Arlington.

This is the second year for the National Invitational Softball Championship Tournament and is operated, supervised and directed by Triple Crown Sports – a sports event company based in Fort Collins, CO – that also runs the preseason and postseason WNIT Basketball Tournaments.
