Cunningham, TN – Montgomery Central High School held its 2018 Prom at the Wilma Rudolph Event Center, with about 300 students enjoying this year’s theme, “Under the Stars”.
Ruth Nunn is the Junior Class Advisor at Montgomery Central High School, she has been instrumental in the school’s proms for 24 of her 25 years there.
“MCHS is unique,” Nunn said “We are the only school in the county whose junior class presents prom to the senior class as a gift. This has been a tradition here at MCHS, I guess, since the school’s earliest proms.”
Nunn says about 300 were in attendance, which included students and their dates. Last year, organizers opened the garage doors and let the festivities spill out onto the grounds, this year it was a little too hot and humid for that.
“I love doing this,” Nunn said. Once again, we had DJ Alex Adames doing the music. He has been with me every year. North Meets South catered the food. This is their second year, and they did a great job. We had hot and cold appetizers, chicken salad, fruits, and vegetables. They also do these doughnut holes that are a huge hit with the kids.
“Another beloved tradition is strawberries and chocolate covered strawberries from Sleigh Strawberry Farm on Seven-Mile Ferry Road. They provide them each year, and the kids love them, we all do.”
Montgomery Central High School’s Junior Class Officers and the Prom Committee work together to do fund raisers. Nunn says, they have to do a lot of work to make this happen, but, it’s a lot of fun too. The class actually raises money with events they hold in their 9th, 10th, and 11th grade years. They hosted two fundraisers this year, and the end result is, Seniors get to attend prom for free, Juniors only have to pay $20.00.
“Our kids really buy into it, they own it, they get excited about their prom,” Nunn said. “The time and effort they put in makes it special. They work hard, and they enjoy it. The seniors who worked with me last year new what to expect, and really appreciated all the work done by everyone.”
On the night of prom, everyone gets to vote for King and Queen. This year’s winners were Brandon James, and Jacquelyn Wimberly.
“Everything went very well,” Nunn said. “Another unique thing to MCHS is, over the years we have had dresses donated, so we have a storage room with more than 100. We want everyone to go to prom, so dresses are available to the girls who need them, and we help the boys with suits too. All that is asked, is that they pay it forward when they get older.”
