APSU Volleyball beats UMKC, remains Undefeated

APSU Women's VolleyballKansas City, MO – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team completed an unblemished stay in Kansas City by holding on for a five-set victory (29-27, 25-15, 22-25, 17-25, 15-10) against host UMKC, Saturday, in the final match of the Kangaroo Klassic at Swinney Recreation Center.

Austin Peay (3-0) opened by winning the first two sets for the first time in the tournament.

However, the first set did not come easily as both teams fended off a pair of set points late in the frame.

The Governors fended off a UMKC set point at 27-26 courtesy a Brooke Moore kill then earned the next two points to claim the set. The second went easier for the Govs as they led wire-to-wire to claim an early 2-0 lead.

UMKC (2-1) rallied from the two-set deficit with impressive offensive performances in both the third and fourth sets.

2018 APSU Volleyball - Nina KorfhageTyrecia Lukes hit six kills to pace the Kangaroos’ 16-kill performance in the third as they held on for a win. Emma Dyer would join the fray in the fourth, posting five kills to lead a 14-kill outing that saw UMKC pull away to win decisively.

But the Governors bounced back from seeing the match tied and took control of the tiebreaker fifth set right at the midway point. Austin Peay scored five points on Nina Korfhage’s turn on serve and tacked on another three with Cecily Gable at the line to build a 10-5 lead they would not relinquish.

2018 APSU Volleyball - Cecily GableSenior Cecily Gable set her career high with 19 kills in the match after tying the mark with 17 kills against both Western Michigan and South Dakota State. Her 53-kill performance in the tournament earned Gable “Most Valuable Player” honors.  

Sophomore Brooke Moore added 14 kills and junior Jenna Panning chipped in 10 kills in the win. Senior Kristen Stucker finished the match with 47 assists while freshman Jaymeson Kinley registered an impressive 34 digs in the contest.

Lukes led UMKC with 25 kills and a .378 attack percentage. She had the bulk of the Kangaroos’ 62-kill outing.

Austin Peay will take the upcoming week to prepare for the MT Blue Raider Bash, next Friday and Saturday. The Governors open that tournament with a 7:00pm, Friday contest against host Middle Tennessee.

Set-By-Set

Set 1, Govs Win 29-27
The opening set was nip-and-tuck throughout with 10 ties and six lead changes. Seven of those ties came in the set’s final 15 points with Austin Peay fending off a pair of UMKC set points while the Kangaroos held off two Govs set point chances.

The last UMKC’s set-point opportunity was denied by a Brooke Moore kill before a block by Logan Carger and Moore set up the Govs final set point opportunity. UMKC committed an error on the next point to hand the Govs the set.

Set 2, Govs Win 25-15
2018 APSU Volleyball - Kristen StuckerThe second set was drained of any drama just before the midway point. Austin Peay strung together a pair of 4-0 runs – a combined 8-1 run – to take a 14-7 lead and it never looked back. The Governors defense held the UMKC offense in check during the frame, the hosts finishing with nine kills but committing 10 attack errors.

Set 3, Kangaroos Win 22-25
After its sloppy offensive performance in the third, UMKC put that behind it quickly in the third. The Kangaroos tied their match high with 16 kills in the third and posted a .378 team attack percentage.

However, it was another close set throughout with 15 ties and two lead changes. Austin Peay forced the last of those ties at 19-19 but UMKC scored the next two points and nursed that narrow advantage to the finish line.

Set 4, Kangaroos Win 25-17
2018 APSU Volleyball - Jaymeson KinleyUMKC kept its offensive momentum going in the fourth with a 14-kill outing. The Kangaroos gained control of the frame with a 9-2 run to take a 16-9 lead midway through the set.

Austin Peay tried to climb back in the set with a 5-2 run but UMKC responded with four straight points to secure the win and force the tiebreaker.

Set 5, Govs Win 15-10
The fifth started out like the first set with the teams trading the lead twice times and battling through three ties. Austin Peay forced the last of those ties and lead changes with a 5-0 burst that gave it a 7-4 lead then the Govs took control with a three-point burst for a 10-5 lead.

 

APSU Govs, Notably

All Tournament Honors
Three Governors were named to the Kangaroo Klassic all-tournament team:

  • Cecily Gable earned tournament MVP honors after leading the Govs with 53 kills (4.42 kills per set) while posting a .211 attack percentage and notching 31 digs (2.58 per set).
  • Kristen Stucker finished with 126 assists (10.50 per set) and had 11 kills of her own. She paced the Govs to a .214 team attack percentage during the tournament.
  • Jaymeson Kinley impressed in her first collegiate action, recording 64 digs (5.33 per set) while also providing three kills and 17 assists.

Taff Notches 200th Block
Senior Kaylee Taff became the 14th Govs player to record 200 career kills with a three-block outing against UMKC. She was tied for the team lead with eight blocks during the tournament with Stucker and freshman Karli Graham.

Setting An Early Tempo
Austin Peay finished an in-season tournament with a winning record for the seventh consecutive tournament. They’ve won four of those seven tournaments outright.
