An open letter from APSU Football coach Will Healy on the season opener at Georgia

APSU Sports Information

APSU FootballTo the Austin Peay Family:

As you read this, the Austin Peay State University (APSU) Governors are on a journey through the state of Georgia, stopping at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta on the way to a walk through at Athens’ Sanford Stadium, one of the largest and most storied venues in all of college sports. (Even someone who grew up a Georgia Tech fan can admit that!)

We’ll play Saturday afternoon “Between the Hedges” at 2:30 Central on ESPN. Just thinking about that gives me chills. Are you kidding me? Sanford Stadium? On ESPN? I’ve been so excited all summer for this game. We’ll create memories that will last a lifetime, including that moment when we run out of the tunnel in front of 90,000-plus fans.

It’ll be just the first chapter in what I believe will be a truly special season for this team and for you, the Govs Family.

I’m so incredibly proud of these kids, the work they’ve put in since the last time we played. Their bodies and minds are stronger. They’ve invested so much to make sure they never have to feel again like they did last November. That’s why our team motto for the 2018 season is #LeaveNoDoubt.

APSU Football head coach Will HealyWe believe we had a playoff-worthy team a year ago, but we didn’t do enough on the field to shift the committee’s perceptions of this program and whether we belonged in the 24-team tournament. It broke our hearts – it broke yours, too – but we learned from it. We’ve used that pain every single day for the past 10 months; it has motivated us in everything we’ve done. We will not let that happen again. We want to control what we can control: win the Ohio Valley Conference and #LeaveNoDoubt come late November.

That’s our goal: to make the FCS playoffs for the first time in school history – and then make a run once we get there. We’re not hiding from that ambition. We’re proud of it. We’ve worked for it. We believe we deserve it, based on the work we’ve put in to this point.

But the work is far from done. The work continues Saturday.

As always, this team is beyond grateful for your passion and support. It’s an incredible community, as evidenced by your outpouring for Joshua, Kristen, Landrey and the Eargle family. We couldn’t do this without you, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you this fall.

And, as always, I’m proud to be your coach. This place and this school are so special to me, Emily and Eli. We’re thankful God brought us here. The friendships and experiences have changed our lives.

And we’re not done yet. The best is still yet to come.

GO GOVS!

Will Healy, Head Coach
