APSU Women's BasketballClarksville, TN – Off the back of one of the squad’s winningest seasons in the past decade, Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s basketball team began its new season by having its first official practice today.

The Govs are coming off a season with their most wins (16) since the 2008-09 season and the most conference wins (9) since the 2010-11 season.

The Govs have also made the OVC Tournament in each of coach David Midlick‘s first three seasons.

The Govs lost three key players in Brianne Alexander, Falon Baker, and Bri Williams, but the Govs still have reason to feel confident in their returning players and new recruits.

Keisha Gregory, the Govs’ second-leading scorer and leading rebounder last season, is primed for a huge senior season. Gregory also shot 94.5 percent (69-for-73) from the line last season, a program record. The Govs also return Arielle Gonzalez-Varner, who came on strong at the end of the season and earned a spot in the starting lineup.

Midlick brought in three fresh faces to the roster, the first being Kasey Kidwell. The Asheville, North Carolina native was named All-Conference and All-State while prepping at Carolina Day School.

Midlick also tapped into the state of North Carolina by signing forward D’Shara Booker, who hails from Charlotte. The 6’1 forward brings another good presence in and around the basket for the Govs. Midlick stayed in his home state for his last addition to the roster, adding Murfreesboro native Maggie Knowles as well. Knowles brings versatility to the Govs as she is able to play both guard and forward.

“I’m obviously excited to start official practice,” said Midlick. “Our players have worked hard in September and I’m looking forward to having them on the court for a little longer period of time. We will try to build upon our emphasis-communication on the court and playing quickly and smartly in the next few weeks.”

The Govs have one exhibition game at home against Georgetown (Kentucky) College, November 2nd, 2018 before opening the season on the road at Cincinnati, November 6th.
