Raised on the Apsáalooke (Crow) reservation in Montana, Red Star’s work is informed both by her cultural heritage and her engagement with many forms of creative expression, including photography, sculpture, video, fiber arts and performance.

An avid researcher of archives and historical narratives, Red Star seeks to incorporate and recast her research, offering new and unexpected perspectives in work that is at once inquisitive, witty and unsettling. Intergenerational collaborative work is integral to her practice, along with creating a forum for the expression of Native women’s voices in contemporary art.

“I’m really excited to present Wendy Red Star’s work to our students and to the Clarksville community,” Michael Dickins, director of The New Gallery, said. “Apsáalooke Feminist, Four Seasons and White Squaw are three separate bodies of work curated for this exhibition. I find they are excellent examples of her use of photography in creating dialogue around the issues of identity, representation and feminism. It’s a pleasure to have Red Star’s work here in The New Gallery at Austin Peay; prior to its inclusion in her first mid-career survey at the Newark Museum in Newark, New Jersey, curated by Nadiah Rivera Fellah and Tricia Laughlin Bloom, which opens in February 2019.”

Red Star has exhibited in the United States and abroad at venues, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Foundation Cartier pour l’ Art Contemporain, Domaine de Kerguéhennec, Portland Art Museum, Hood Art Museum, St. Louis Art Museum, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, among others.

She served a visiting lecturer at institutions, including Yale University, the Figge Art Museum, the Banff Centre, National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Dartmouth College, CalArts, Flagler College, Fairhaven College and I.D.E.A. Space in Colorado Springs.

In 2015, Red Star was awarded an Emerging Artist Grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, and in 2017 she received the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award. She was recently named a 2019 School of Art at Chautauqua Institution core faculty member.

Red Star holds a BFA from Montana State University, Bozeman, and an MFA in sculpture from University of California, Los Angeles. She lives and works in Portland, Oregon.

The exhibit opens Monday, October 1st, at The New Gallery in the APSU Art + Design building on the campus of Austin Peay State University, and runs through October 26th. Red Star will give a public lecture on her work, October 4th at 6:00pm in Heydel Hall in the Art + Design building.

There will be a reception earlier in the day from noon to 1:00pm, with a gallery talk with Red Star beginning at 12:30pm. All events are free and open to the public.
