Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) mens golf team will host its lone home event of the 2018-19 school year this October 14th and 15th, 2018 at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, TN, looking to outlast both Mother Nature and nine other teams at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.
In what looks to be a wet and soggy scheduled 54-hole event (36 holes on Monday and 18 Tuesday), the Governors will be facing an Ohio Valley Conference heavy field on the 7,000 yard, par 72 course with Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Murray State, Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Tennessee State and UT Martin joining Austin Peay in the tournament field, as well as Binghamton, Evansville and Trevecca.
The Govs enter the tournament having last played two weeks ago at the Hummingbird Invitational in Sapphire Valley, NC, finishing seventh overall in the event despite posting three of its four lowest overall rounds of the fall — finishing at one-under as a team.
Austin Peay will have nine golfers (out of 66 total golfers in the tournament field) tee it up at Graystone with Chase Korte, Michael Busse, Garrett Whitfield, Austin Lancaster and Micah Knisley playing the one through five positions for the Govs, while Sean Butscher, Sam Lopez, Alex Vegh and Jordan Rodriguez will all play as individuals in the event.
Korte and Busse have led the Governors this fall, with Korte having posted sub-par rounds in four of his nine rounds played this fall – averaging a team-low 72.2 strokes per round – while Busse has two sub-par rounds out of six rounds played and is averaging 72.5 strokes per round.
Both Korte and Busse finished in the Top-20 in their last event two weeks ago, both shooting one-under par 215’s.
Whitfield and Knisley have also posted two sub-par rounds each this fall, while this tournament will be the second action seen by Lancaster this season – with the other coming at the Memphis Intercollegiate back on September 17th and 18th.
As for the Governors individual players in the tournament: this will be the collegiate debut for Rodriguez (a freshman) and the first for Lopez – who had to sit out the 2017-18 season due to injury.
Vegh has three below-par rounds played so far this season and the best overall finish by an APSU golfer this fall (a 10th-place finish at the Golfweek Program Championship on September 9th-11th). Butscher has one sub-par round in his two events played this fall.
UT Martin is the defending tournament champion, while Austin Peay last won the tournament in the fall of 2014.
