APSU Women's BasketballClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s basketball team won its first and final exhibition game against Georgetown College, 108-74, Friday, at the Winfield Dunn Center.

Coach David Midlick started two freshmen in his starting lineup, with Kasey Kidwell and Maggie Knowles earning the nod.

Kidwell immediately repaid Midlick for the decision, as after the first bucket of the game, she stole the inbounds pass and made the easy layup that got the Govs bench going early.

The Tigers did not back down though, as they matched the Govs intensity in the first quarter. Malaka Frank was impressive on the night and had six points in the quarter as the Govs narrowly led after one, 17-16.

The first quarter was close, but the second was anything but. Brianah Ferby and Knowles both hit three’s to spark a 17-0 run to start the second quarter. The Govs combined a better shooting quarter with a high press up the court that led to the Tigers not even scoring a point until the 4:52 mark.

However, after a timeout by the Tigers, they slowly cut into the lead and a three right before the buzzer only put the Govs up by 10.

The Govs put together another efficient quarter coming out of halftime, mainly led by the Ferby sisters. Brianah Ferby hit two three’s in the quarter as her sister Brandi Ferby did her damage from all around the court, hitting a three, a jumper, and a couple free throws in the quarter.

Midlick also had a healthy rotation of five subs in at most stoppages, as he saw how certain units worked together. The Govs built a 15-point lead at the end of the quarter off the back of a 34-point quarter.

The Govs showed no signs of slowing down, as Brandi continued her very efficient night, finishing as the second leading scorer for the Govs (14 points) even though she took the second-least amount of shots from the field. The Govs hit the century mark for points early through the fourth and ended up winning by 34 points.

Gabby Gregory also provided a spark for the Govs offensively with two triples of her own in the quarter, as she finished with three treys, second only to Brianah Ferby’s four three’s on the night.

Austin Peay’s success tonight came from the glass, as they outrebounded the Tigers by 27. The Govs also more offensive rebounds (27) than defensive rebounds (26) and also had six players in double figures. Nieja Crawford, as a guard, was the leading rebounder for the Govs with 10, including eight on the offensive end.

After not making a three in the first quarter, the Govs made at least four in each of the three remaining quarters. The Ferby sisters consistently paced the Govs as Brianah led the Govs with 17 points with Brandi pouring in her aforementioned 14. Arielle Gonzalez-Varner also scored 14 in 20 minutes on the court.

The Govs return to action next Tuesday with a tough road test against Cincinnati. The Govs then return to the Dunn Center to officially open their home schedule next Friday against Christian Brothers.
