Instant Peay Play: Month-long road trip faces APSU Men’s Basketball after home opener

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) men’s basketball team opens its 2018-19 regular season at home this Tuesday, November 6th, 2018 at the Dunn Center with a 7:00pm contest versus Oakland City, but then packs it bags for a month-long, seven-game road trip.

The extended road swing for the Governors will be the longest such stretch of games for APSU in the regular season since the beginning of the 2010-11 season, when they opened their schedule with nine straight games away from Clarksville – including two Ohio Valley Conference contests.

The Govs, who logged a 19-15 overall record under OVC Coach of the Year Matt Figger in 2017-18, will play teams from seven different conferences over that stretch, including two that posted winning records – beginning with the Southeastern Conference’s Mississippi State (25-12) on Nov. 9th and Big South Conference member Campbell (18-16) on November 18th.

APSU will also play South Florida (American Athletic Conference), Central Connecticut (Northeast Conference), Ohio (Mid-American Conference), Troy (Sun Belt Conference and Alabama A&M (Southwestern Athletic Conference) before returning home for two games on Dec. 8th contest versus Calvary and a Dec. 15th versus Purdue Fort Wayne.

The South Florida, Central Connecticut, Campbell and Ohio games are all a part of the Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic which the first of two in-season tournaments for the Govs, who will also participate in the St. Pete Shootout on December 21st and 22nd; which includes a rematch versus Campbell to open the tournament followed by a contest with either Liberty or Alabama State.

Austin Peay State University  will have one final road game versus Arkansas on Dec. 28th to make it 10 out of their first 13 games of the season away from home before opening OVC play on Jan. 3rd at home versus Eastern Kentucky.

This is the challenging opening schedule for the Governors, who return seven letter winners from last year’s squad, led by OVC Freshman of the year Terry Taylor (6-5, G/F) – who averaged 15.6 points per game and 8.6 rebounds.

Also returning are seniors (Chris Porter-Bunton (6-5, F), Steve Harris (6-4, G/F), Zach Glotta (6-0, G) and sophomores Dayton Gumm (6-2, G), Richard Harris (6-6, F) and Ivan Cucak (7-0, C).

They will be joined this season by six new players to the roster, including four transfers: Jarrett Givens (6-5, Gr., G) from Adams State, Jabari McGhee (6-7, Gr., F) from

Western Kentucky, Isaiah Hart (6-2, Jr., G) from Motlow State Community College and Eli Abaev (6-8, Jr., G/F) from Eastern Florida as well as two freshmen; Antwuan Butler (6-0, G) and Matheus Silvera (7-0, C).
