APSU Men’s Basketball rolls over Calvary, 116-33

APSU Sports Information

APSU Men's BasketballClarksville, TN – Welcome home Govs, here’s a program-record 83-point win! Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team trounced visiting Calvary in their first appearance in the Dunn Center since November 6th, taking complete control from the opening tip and never relinquishing it in a 116-33 decision.

At no point did Austin Peay seem in any danger of losing this game.

The Govs enjoyed runs of 17-4 to open the game, 16-4 in the middle of the first half and 30-6 to close the half and took a 65-21 advantage into the break. Calvary averaged a turnover per minute in the first half, with Zach Glotta setting his career high with six steals all in the first half.

The second half was more of the same. The Govs scored the first 15 points of the half, with the Warriors going nearly 11 minutes of game time between made shots from the floor. Although only nine Govs were available on this night, all nine scored and played double-digit minutes, with seven scoring in double figures, led by sophomore Dayton Gumm with a season-high 18 points.

So thorough was Austin Peay’s second-half domination that Calvary scored just 12 points over the final 20 minutes, including just two in the paint. Jarrett Givens had 11 points by himself for the Govs over the final 20 minutes.

The Difference

I mean… tough to choose here, really. It’s an embarrassment of riches. To say the Govs dominated every facet of the event is a bit of an understatement. But the program-record 23 steals acquired by the Govs—which obliterated the previous record of 17—were part of an assumed program-record (at least since 1999) 35 forced turnovers and led to 52 points off turnover.

APSU Notably

The 33 points allowed were the fewest in program history during the Dunn Center era, two short of the 35 given up against Knoxville College in a November 24th, 2003 contest.

The 12 field goals allowed were a modern record-low dating back to the 1999-00 season.

The 35 turnovers forced were the most since a 30-turnover game by Southeast Missouri (January 29th, 2008); it’s the most forced in a single game by the Govs since electronic record-keeping began in the 1999-00 season.

Glotta (six steals) and Givens (five) both set career-highs and in doing, so became the first Austin Peay teammates since Zavion Williams and Ed Dyson (Bryan College, November 5th, 2014) to record five or more steals in the same game.

Gumm’s 18 points marked his 20th career double-digit scoring night as a Gov and his first time this season to lead the Govs in scoring.

The Govs three-game winning streak is its first of the season and first three-gamer since four straight from January 25th-February 3rd, 2018.

Make it three straight seasons for the Govs to start the home schedule at 2-0.

With 12 rebounds, senior Chris Porter-Bunton has now pulled down double-figure rebounds four times in his career, and twice in the last three games.

The Govs are averaging 15 steals in their last three games.

Senior Steve Harris scored 15 points and has reached double figures in six straight games; he’s averaging 12.2 points on 46.0 percent (29-of-63) shooting during that stretch.

The Govs have now started December at 2-0 for the first time since 2010-11.

Glotta set his aforementioned career-high with six steals and finished with 17 points, his 25th career double-digit scoring night. It wasn’t all great news for the senior, however; his consecutive made free-throws streak was snapped at 23.

In addition to the myriad program records, the Govs set season-highs in points (116), field goals attempted (79), rebounds (56) and committed a season-low 12 fouls.

Sophomore Richard Henderson scored a season-high 13 points, his first double-digit outing since opening night.

Sophomore center Ivan Cucak scored a career-high 14 points and had the first game of his career with multiple made three-pointers.

Coaching Quotables with APSU Head Coach Matt Figger

On defense
“From about the 14-minute mark on, we were really good defensively. We’ve been striving to be better defensively. In a game like this, sometimes kids lose focus and start playing to the score instead of playing the game the right way, but I thought for the most part that our kids stayed locked in to what we wanted to do.”

On getting locked back in
“We wanted to get back home; we’ve had a lot of hard games and this was a game that gives our guys a chance to feel pretty good about themselves.”

Up Next for APSU Govs

Back-to-back home games! The Govs will host Purdue Fort Wayne on the back half of the season’s first homestand; tipoff is 4:00pm, December 15th, in the Dunn Center.
