APSU Men's TennisClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s tennis team gets its spring season underway by traveling to familiar foe Middle Tennessee, 1:00pm, Wednesday, January 16th.

The Governors are led by senior Almantas Ozelis, who was named First-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference a year ago.

Ozelis went undefeated at No. 1 singles in OVC play (4-0) last spring and went 5-3 in tournament play this past fall.

After losing his doubles partner of three years to graduation, Ozelis teamed exclusively in the fall with freshman Anton Damberg, in what looks to be the No. 1 doubles pairing this spring. The duo went 4-3 in tournament play, the best record amongst the four Govs doubles pairings in the fall.

“I’m excited to get the spring going,” said Governors head coach Ross Brown. “Looking back, Almas (Almantas Ozelis) had a very good fall and I think all of our players have improved. Looking forward, our doubles are going to be stronger and if we stay injury-free, we will be a force when conference comes around.”

In addition to Damberg, Oliver Andersson also is one of the two new faces on the Govs roster. The two freshmen, both hailing from Sweden, got their first taste of college tennis in the fall and will provide valuable depth. Andersson’s first collegiate win came against an MTSU opponent in Daniel Stormon, winning in three sets (7-6, 5-7, 7-6) at the Louisville Invitational in October.

“The additions of Anton and Oliver will help us this semester,” said Brown. “We have a busy, busy schedule here so if we can continue to improve and get a little better each week, I’m confident we can perform well in conference play.”

The Govs went 1-2 in singles against MTSU players in the fall, with Andersson picking up the lone victory. The Govs and the Blue Raiders split a pair of doubles matches in the fall as well, with the team of Jacob Lorino and Timo Kiesslich prevailing in the Flight C Doubles Main Draw at the Louisville Invitational.
