Clarksville, TN – After a grueling four-game roadtrip that spanned two weeks, Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s basketball returns to the friendly confines of the Dunn Center to take on Tennessee State, 5:30pm, Thursday, January 24th.
The Governors (8-9, 3-3 OVC) fell to SIU Edwardsville at the last second before responding with a dominant fourth quarter against Eastern Illinois, as they claimed their first road win of the season.
The Govs had plenty of standouts against EIU, including young freshman Maggie Knowles. Knowles, who had scored 10 points against SIUE a couple days earlier, scored a career-high 16 points and tied a career-high with seven rebounds.
If that wasn’t impressive enough the in-state product did not miss against EIU, going 6-of-6 from the field, 1-of-1 from three-point range, and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. As a result, Knowles was named Ohio Valley Conference Co-Freshman of the Week, the first APSU player to win the award since Brianah Ferby won it twice last season.
Knowles was not the only Gov that contributed to the win over EIU. Keisha Gregory, who had a game-high 20 points against SIUE, only had two points in a tie game going into the fourth quarter.
However, Gregory dominated the period, scoring 11 points, as many as the entire EIU team in the fourth quarter, to go along with six free-throws. Gregory also recorded a career-high seven assists, influencing the game by more than just scoring in the fourth quarter.
The EIU game was a day for career-highs, as Brandi Ferby scored a career and game-high 19 points with four three-pointers. Ferby also had a career-high seven steals, one off the single-game program record. Ferby’s final three-pointer put the Govs up eight in the fourth quarter, as they used a 19-5 run in the fourth to pull away comfortably.
About the Tennessee State Tigers
The Tigers (1-17, 1-5 OVC) are a long way from the team that won an OVC title a few years ago. The Tigers just have one win, coming against Eastern Kentucky at home. The Tigers do not shoot the ball very well, as they rank last in the OVC in field-goal percentage (31.2 percent) and three-point percentage (21.5 percent).
Taylor Roberts and Tia Wooten lead the offense for TSU. The duo were both named to the Preseason All-OVC team, as the Tigers were only one of three programs to place multiple players on the Preseason All-OVC team.
The Govs are only 4-6 in their last 10 meetings against Tennessee State, but have won the past two games. In the lone game the two teams played last season, Gregory scored 15 points and had seven rebounds as the Govs rolled in the second half and won by 16.
