TBI charges Middle Tennessee Nurse with Patient Abuse, Reckless Homicide

Tennessee Bureau of InvestigationNashville, TN – An investigation by Special Agents with the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has resulted in the arrest of a Middle Tennessee registered nurse, on charges of patient abuse and reckless homicide.

In November 2018, working alongside the Vulnerable Adult Protective Investigative Team with the Davidson County District Attorney General’s Office, TBI Agents began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Charlene Murphey (DOB 07/21/1942).

On December 26th, 2017, Mrs. Murphey was a patient at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Radonda Vaught was a registered nurse who was part of the team providing treatment.

During the course of the investigation, Agents determined that the actions taken by Radonda Vaught were responsible for the abuse of Mrs. Murphey, and her ultimate death. Vaught is no longer an employee of Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

On February 1st, the Davidson County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Radonda Leanne Vaught (DOB 01/25/1984) with one count of Impaired Adult Abuse and one count of Reckless Homicide. On February 4th, Vaught was arrested and booked into the Davidson County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
