Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) Women’s and Gender Studies Program and the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance will host the 18th annual production of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play, “The Vagina Monologues,” at 7:00pm on February 20th and 22nd in Clement Auditorium.

18th annual production of "The Vagina Monologues" to be held at Austin Peay State University's Clement Auditorium February 20th and 22nd.

18th annual production of “The Vagina Monologues” to be held at Austin Peay State University’s Clement Auditorium February 20th and 22nd.

The event is part of the international V-DAY campaign to raise awareness about violence against women and girls and raise money for agencies that support survivors of interpersonal violence.

Austin Peay’s production will feature a new monologue written by Dr. Dwonna Goldstone, APSU professor of English and African American Studies, about a Tennessee woman serving time in prison. This monologue honors the VDAY 2019 theme highlighting the experiences of women currently or formerly incarcerated in jail, prison or detention centers.

The dance group, Diamond Divas, will open the Wednesday night show, with a dance routine, and on Friday night Monica Meeks will perform an original monologue bringing attention to sexual assault survivors in the military.

U.S. veterans and active service members are encouraged to attend the show and support this community effort to raise awareness about sexual assault survivors who have served in the armed forces.

All money raised from the performances will be donated to Clarksville’s Sexual Assault Center and Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee.

This year’s performances will feature two teams of directors, one team for each show.

Wednesday night’s show will be co-directed by APSU students Kianna Marshall and Dusty. Friday night’s show will be co-directed by Adriane Hatfield, local realtor, and Barbara Lee Gray, APSU instructor of English and Women’s and Gender Studies. All directors are veteran performers of the show.

Austin Peay first produced “The Vagina Monologues” in 2002, and the show has been performed every year since, raising more than $20,000 for organizations such as the Sexual Assault Center, Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee, and Urban Ministries Safehouse in Clarksville.

By joining V-DAY’s global fundraising efforts, Austin Peay and tens of thousands of other communities and college campuses help raise consciousness, change laws to protect women and girls, fund rape crisis centers and domestic violence shelters, educate communities and raise more than $100 million for groups working to end violence and support survivors and their families.

Additionally, a portion of the APSU Clothesline Project will be displayed in Clement Lobby during the performances. For information, contact Dr. Jill Eichhorn at 931.221.6314.
