APSU Women's Track and FieldMyrtle Beach, SC – Austin Peay State University (APSU) Track and Field’s Maya Perry-Grimes really enjoys her time in the Palmetto State.

After winning the long jump yesterday, the junior tacked on another win in the triple jump with an 11.98m leap on Saturday, a year after smashing her personal-best in that event at this very same meet.

Perry-Grimes’ achievement was part of a larger arc of team-wide success at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, which wrapped up Saturday.

Another jumper, senior Nia Gibbs-Francis, picked up her season’s second win with a 1.65m leap, securing her first victory during outdoor season since 2017.

“Great for us and our confidence to complete that sweep in the jump events,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “That’s the best Maya’s jumped since we were down here last year.”

The track saw its share of victors as well. Sophomore Lennex Walker took the top spot in the 100m hurdles with a 14.29 mark, with Camaryn McCLelland (14.61, third), Kamille Dunbar (14.68, fourth) and Kaitlyn Black (14.92, fifth) all comfortably in the top five. Freshman Tiyanna Johnson posted a winning run in the 200m dash with a 24.81 mark, opening her outdoor career as a Gov with a victory, and also placed fifth in the 100m dash at 12.46.

“We were dominant in the hurdles,” Molnar said. “That’s Camaryn’s best time ever and Kaitlyn opened things up a second faster than she did a year ago. And Johnson, you can’t say enough about what she did, to be a freshman in these conditions and be the only athlete to break 25 seconds was huge.”

A plethora of Govs opened the outdoor session by joining Johnson in the top-five. Sophomore Sabrina Richman posted a 57.12 in the 400m dash, with junior Amelia Thiesing in fifth, across the line at 58.04, while senior Emmaculate Kiplagat was runner-up in the 3000m run with a 10:45.93 mark.

Freshman Mikaela Smith, who has been solid all season in the 800m run, was third at 2:20.12, but she had company in fellow first-year runner Madison Morstad, who finished fourth (personal-best 2:20.33).

The Govs concluded the day by taking the top two spots in the 4x400m relay; the A-group broke four minutes with a 3:57.40 mark, while the second unit wasn’t far off the pace at 4:05.33.

The Govs take a week off before returning to action in Nashville, site of the Vanderbilt Black and Gold, March 22nd-23rd.
