The Governors return to the friendly confines after battling through last week’s four-game road trip. Austin Peay won an Ohio Valley Conference series opener at Eastern Kentucky, Friday, but it was their lone win of the road trip.

APSU will seek to get back on a winning track at The Hand where they are 9-6 this season.

Evansville enters the midweek outing following its Missouri Valley Conference series win against Dallas Baptist. The Purple Aces won eight straight games prior to the series-ending loss to the Patriots. Evansville is 2-0 against OVC opponents this season, winning midweek games against SIU Edwardsville and UT Martin.

First Hacks

Fifteen different Governors have started a game in the season’s first 30 games. Only two players have started every game in 2019: center fielder Garrett Spain and utility man Parker Phillips.

Senior catcher David Martinez moved into the No. 3 spot in the batting order against Belmont and has batted .444 (12-27) with three homers and nine RBI. His .393 batting average is 12th among NCAA catchers (49th overall) and second among all OVC hitters.

Center fielder Garrett Spain has reached base in all 30 games as a Governor. He leads all OVC freshmen in batting average (.333), home runs (3), RBI (27) and runs scored (27).

Junior utility man Parker Phillips hit his 40th career home run against Belmont, Sunday, and his nine home runs in 2019 ranks 28th nationally. He also was hit by a pitch for the 46th time in his career at Lipscomb, Tuesday. Phillips is APSU’s career leader in home runs and times hit by pitch.

Sophomore Bobby Head saw his career-best hit streak end at 11 games. He batted .361 (13-for-36) during the streak and raised his batting average 92 points to a season best .238. Head also had a seven-game streak with a RBI during the hit streak.

Freshman designated hitter Matt Joslin battled through a tough weekend at Eastern Kentucky, going 1-for-8 at the plate. However, his lone hit was a solo home run in the opener, his second of the season.

Redshirt senior Garrett Kueber has made 14 consecutive starts at shortstop and coincidentally has a hit in 16 of those 17 games. He has batted .294 (20-for-68) during the streak, primarily as the Govs No. 2 hitter.

Freshman Gino Avros has reached base safely in his last 11 games, posting nine hits and nine walks during the streak. He has scored 19 runs over his last 16 games.

Junior outfielder Malcolm Tipler has reached base safely in 16 consecutive games, dating back to the Tennessee Tech series opener. He has 13 hits and 12 walks during the streak.

Sophomore first baseman John McDonald had a hit in each game of the Eastern Kentucky series, including his season’s first home run. His .400 batting average was second-best among the Govs hitters in Richmond.

Senior outfielder Aaron Campbell and junior outfielder Tyler Hubbard have both been late defensive substitutes for the Govs during the past three weeks.

Toeing The Rubber

Left-hander Nolan Monaghan is scheduled to make his second start as a Governor. He made his first start against Murray State, March 27th.

Monaghan struck out seven over 3.1 innings in his first start, allowing four runs on three hits.

Austin Peay is 4-3 in midweek games this season.
