In the No. 5 pairing against EKU, Caroline Waite and MiMi Arrington came back from an early deficit in the first set before taking it 21-17 and securing the second set, 21-15.

Cori Theiss and Lucy Randall fought hard in the No. 4 pairing against the Colonels’ Rachel Woody and Kennedy Wilson with the first set going 23-25, and the Govs took the second set 21-19, before falling 9-15 in the third.

Ginny Gerig and Chloe Stitt got out with an early lead in their first set and cruised to victory in the No. 3 pairing against Maria Ferragonio and Kaylin Johnson of Eastern Kentucky in straight sets, 21-7, 21-15.

Just as the No. 3 pairing, Ciera Koons and Brooke Moore for the Govs in the No. 2 pairing came out with aggression early and defeated Eastern Kentucky’s Sydney Schoen and Katelynn Caserma-Kloeble in straight sets, 21-11, 21-10.

Haley Turner and Jenna Panning went back and forth with the Colonels’ Dena Tekavec and Jovana Bulatovic before the Govs took the No. 1 pairing in straight sets, 21-18, 21-19 to secure the Govs’ 4-1 margin of victory.

Match Two for the Govs was against 16th-ranked Georgia State at 5:00pm. Rain started to pick up at the Govs Beach Volleyball Complex but that did not stop Moore and Koons from a battle with the Panthers in the No. 2 pairing, though they ultimately fell in two close sets to Olivia Stasevich and Georgia Johnson, 21-18, 21-19.

Governors head coach Taylor Mott was satisfied with how her team played Saturday and was happy with how the regular season turned out for the Govs.

“I thought we started off slow against Eastern Kentucky but was pleased on how we got back on track and came out with the win,” Mott said. “I thought we showed a lot of improvement against a very good team in Georgia State. Even though it wasn’t the outcome we wanted, I loved the progress out of these ladies.

“I am really proud on how this team grew this season. We have a very young team with many ups and down this season, but with coming back next season, I think we are in really good place moving forward.”‘
