APSU Softball plays Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky in season’s final home games

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) softball team will host its final pair of home Ohio Valley Conference doubleheaders this weekend at Cathi Maynard Park-Cheryl Holt Field as they welcome Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky.
The action will begin, 1:00pm, Friday versus Morehead State, while Eastern Kentucky and the Govs open play Sunday with a scheduled 1:00pm first pitch.
Friday’s games will also see the official ribbon-cutting dedication ceremony for Cathi Maynard Park, with Andrea Maynard throwing out the first pitch, while Sunday will be Senior Day for the Govs six seniors Kacy Acree , Danielle Liermann , Carly Mattson , Natalie Schilling , Kelly Mardones  and Morgan Rackel , as the play their last home games of their record-breaking careers.
The Governors (25-18, 10-4 OVC) enter the weekend in the all-important fourth-place spot in the OVC standings, after sweeping a conference doubleheader at Tennessee Tech, Wednesday. The top four teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular-season getting a first-round bye in the OVC Championship Tournament.
Heading into this weekend’s action, the Govs have four players hitting .300-or-better on the season, led by Acree’s .349 average, which includes six home runs, 25 RBI and a team-high 33 runs scored.
Right behind her is Liermann, who is hitting at a .345 clip, with a team- and OVC-best 15 home runs and 37 RBI.
Rounding out the quartet of .300 hitters for Austin Peay are Mattson (.336, 10 HR, 27 RBI) and Kelsey Gross  (.311, 2 HR, 17 RBI).
In the circle, Rackel continues her impressive final campaign for the Govs, coming in with a 18-5 overall record, a 2.11 ERA and 181 strikeouts in 152.2 innings of work.
Rackel’s win total ties for the most in the OVC this season, while her strikeout total is 30 more than the conference’s runner-up in the category.
Rounding out the Govs pitching staff are Gross, who enters with a 4-1 record, a 1.70 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 49.1 innings, and Kelly Mardones  who is 3-12, with a 4.41 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 81 innings pitched.
The Morehead State Eagles (2-33, 0-14 OVC) enter the weekend in last place in the OVC standings, and still looking for their first conference win of the season.
Offensively, Morehead State is led by Kalle Coleman’s .290 batting average and team-best five home runs and 10 RBI.
In the circle, Randi Hamilton has both Morehead State wins, coming in with a 2-7 overall record, with 20 strikeouts in 59 innings pitched.
The Eastern Kentucky Colonels (26-16, 12-4 OVC) enter the weekend tied with Southeast Missouri for second-place in the conference standings and have a pair of games at Murray State on Friday before facing the Govs.
Offensively, EKU is one of only two teams in the OVC batting .300-or-better as a team, with six players over the .300 mark – led by Sammi Miller’s .394 batting average, one home run and 20 RBI.
Hannah Clark (.371, 11 HR, 46 RBI) and Destinee Lizzmore (.336, 11 HR, 30 RBI) are the Colonels leaders in home runs and RBIs.
In the circle, Mollie Paulick leads the EKU pitching staff with a 10-6 record, a 2.85 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 88.1 innings pitched, while Samantha Reynoso comes in with an 8-1 record, with a 3.22 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 78.1 innings of work.
Danielle Liermann  ranked in the Top 30 in Division I among active players for home runs (15th), total bases (15th), RBIs (24th) and doubles (28th).
Austin Peay leads the OVC in Team ERA (2.72) and fewest walks given up (73), while tying for best team fielding percentage (.966).
Kacy Acree  needs to score one more run to become the program’s all-time leader, with 131.
Kelsey Gross  needs three strikeouts to reach 150 for her career.
Kacy Acree  needs one hit to move alone into third-place in career hits in program history with 202.
