APSU Softball’s Morgan Rackel signs contract with Canadian Wild, National Pro Fastpitch League

APSU SoftballMarion, IL – Austin Peay State University (APSU) softball pitcher/outfielder Morgan Rackel, who just wrapped up her senior season with the Govs, became the first player in program history to sign a professional contract to play softball after college, signing with the Canadian Wild of Southern Illinois, a member of the National Pro Fastpitch League.

With her signing with the NPF’s Canadian Wild, Rackel – who is a native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada – not only becomes the first Austin Peay State University softball player to sign a pro contract to play softball, she also becomes just the sixth player from the Ohio Valley Conference to sign with the NPF and just the second in the last 11 years.

Rackel, who was named to Softball America’s Top-100 players in the country prior to the start of the 2019 season, finished her senior campaign with a 21-9 record, two saves, a 1.93 ERA and 242 strikeouts in 199.2 innings pitched – earning All-OVC First-Team and National Fastpitch Coaches Association Central Region Third-Team honors for a second straight season.

Canadian Wild of Southern IllinoisNot only is she an outstanding pitcher, Rackel is also a threat at the plate, finishing this past season with a .293 batting average, which included 10 doubles and nine home runs, while driving in 38 runs.

Overall, Rackel posted a 43-16 career record with the Govs in her two seasons, with a 1.68 ERA and 446 career strikeouts after transferring from Weatherford College (Texas), where she earned Second-Team National Junior College Athletic Association All-American honors as a sophomore.

This is the first season in the NPF for the Canadian Wild, who are composed mostly by players who are members of the Canadian National Team – currently ranked third in the world behind only Team U.S.A. and Japan.

The Canadian Wild — who are based out of Marion, IL – open their season on May 28th versus the Beijing Eagles, while their home opener takes place on June 6th versus the USSSA Pride.

The Canadian Wild’s regular-season schedule runs through July 29th.
