Nashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds beat the Memphis Redbirds 8-5 in front of 10,442 fans to give Sounds Manager Jason Wood his 600th career win in professional baseball. Zack Granite hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to break a 4-4 tie to win the game for Nashville.
The Redbirds scored in the top of the first when Drew Robinson hit a double and scored on a single by Andrew Knizner to put Memphis up 1-0. Robinson would extend the Memphis lead 2-0 on a solo home run in the top of the third inning.
Memphis scored another in the fifth when Robinson singled to knock in Kramer Robertson. On the play, Nashville’s Scott Heineman would throw out Tommy Edman at third base from right field to minimize the Redbirds’ threat. It was still 3-0, Memphis.
Matt Davidson would score the first run for Nashville on his 15th home run on the season in the bottom of the fifth. The solo shot cleared the back fence of First Tennessee Park into a construction site in left-center field.
Back-to-back doubles would give Memphis another run in the sixth inning by Rangel Ravelo and Adolis Garcia to push their lead 4-1.
The Sounds had two singles and a walk in the sixth inning to load the bases. With two outs and Davidson up, Memphis’ manager Ben Johnson used a mound visit to check on Redbird’s starter Evan Kruczynski. Johnson decided to let Kruczynski try to get the final out, but Davidson hit a double down the left field line to score all three runs and tied the game at 4.
Hunter Cole led off the bottom of the eighth with a single followed by a Davidson walk to put runners on first and second. Adam Moore walked to load the bases with two outs. In the next at bat on the first pitch, Granite hit a grand slam to give Nashville the 8-4 lead.
Moments after, Heineman was hit by a pitch causing benches to clear. Memphis reliever Jesus Cruz was immediately ejected and so was the manager Johnson. After both teams cleared the field, Memphis first baseman John Nowgowski was ejected along with Nashville’s third baseman Patrick Wisdom.
Edman would hit a solo homer in the ninth, but it would not be enough to spark a comeback as Nashville won 8-5.
With today’s 8-5 win, the Sounds are now 18-28 on the season.
Matt Davidson’s four RBI tied a season-high, matching his effort on May 6th versus Memphis.
Reed Garrett threw a 1-2-3 inning with one strikeout in his Nashville debut. He returned to Texas’ organization from Detroit as a Rule 5 draft pick.
Tomorrow’s series finale starts at 6:35pm, where Nashville Sounds’ Wes Benjamin (1-5, 7.88) will face Memphis Redbirds’ Jake Woodford (3-1, 2.44).
