Sunblocks containing nanoparticles are one of the most common applications of nanotechnology. Nanoscience and nanotechnology are the study and application of extremely small things.

A sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick! Nanometer-sized things are so small (1 billionth of a meter) they often behave differently than larger things do.

Compare two lotions containing zinc oxide. One of them is composed of nanoparticles, and one of them isn’t. How are they different? Why would sunblock be composed of nanoparticulars? Find out in this simple and very brief science activity (suitable for ages 4 to adult).
