Central Civitan’s 111th Lone Oak Picnic has fantastic turnout

The Civitan ClubCunningham, TN – Last Saturday, July 27th, 2019, the Central Civitan held the 111th Annual Lone Oak Picnic at the Central Civitan Club building located at 275 Highway 13.

This free event featured live music, inflatables for the kids, face painting, silent auction, a car cruise in and off course the BBQ the picnic is famous for.

Great day, great crowd, great weather, one hundred and eleven years of doing this and going strong,” said Montgomery County Sheriff John Fuson. “This is one of the biggest and best organized community events that I have ever been to in Montgomery County. Talking to other Sheriffs that go to events across the state, they say the same thing.”

People from all over Montgomery County as well as neighboring counties came by for great food, entertainment, and good conversation. Even though it was not an election year, there was a great turnout for the event.

The musical entertainment for the event was provided by the Back Lot Pickers, Donald Greene and Lucian Greene. There was also a guest performance by the Wimberly Sisters.

The car cruise in feature more cars than the last two years combined. The car show was a big hit with adults and children alike.

“We have had a good turnout on the classic cars cruise in,” Rickey Ray said, Central Civitan. “Everyone seemed to really like it.”

Central Civitan members slow cooked 3 whole hogs, 30 shoulders and 280 chicken halves for the picnic. The food available for purchase was BBQ by the pound, BBQ sandwich, half chicken, hot dogs, chips, water and drinks.

“The cooks came in at 2:00am in the morning and cooked all through the night.” stated Margaret Adames, Central Civitan.

The Montgomery Central Middle School Junior Civitan Club was raising money by selling ice cream.

“Today we are raising money for the middle school club.” stated Junior Civitan High School President Madison. “The high school next year is going to hold a fundraiser for the arts program. Because we are kinda of limited. As of right now, our funding has been cut. I am not sure by how much. I am a member of the band and we are due for new uniforms but we are lacking money.”

The local community comes together at the Lone Oak Picnic to talk with neighbors, family and friends while listening to music and enjoying some fine food. It’s also a good time to learn about the issues facing the community.

“We had a really good turnout this year, said Ray. “I think everyone had a good time.”

The Central Civitan has sponsored the Lone Oak Picnic since 1975. All the money raised is used in the communities south of the Cumberland River through several projects sponsored by the Central Civitan Club. The Central Civitan Club, for example, supports the local Boy and Girl Scout troops. The club provides financial assistance to victims of house fires in the community.

“We support the Junior Civitan at the Montgomery Central Middle School and Junior Civitan that we just started at Montgomery Central High School,” Ray stated. “At Cumberland Heights Elementary, they were trying to build a special type of playground for handicapped kids so we donated to help get that built.”

“Central Civitan is awesome. They are always right there to do what is needed to help the community”, stated Sheriff Fuson.
