Clarksville, TN – The Clarksville Gas and Water Department wants August 11th, or 8/11, to serve as a reminder for residents and contractors to always call 811 to locate buried utility lines before beginning any digging project.
Calling 811 connects to Tennessee 811, the local one-call center, which notifies utility companies of the intent to dig.
Professional locators are sent to the requested digging site to mark the locations of underground lines, free of charge, with flags, spray paint or both.
Locating and avoiding underground lines is important, and every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a call to 811.
Striking a line could cause injury or a power or water outage, and could require expensive repairs and fines. Even when digging down only a few inches, the risk of striking an underground utility line still exists. Installing a mailbox, building a deck, or planting a tree are all examples of projects that need a call to 811 before starting.
“On August 11th , we remind homeowners and professional contractors alike to call 811 before digging to eliminate the risk of striking an underground utility line,” Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts said. “This is the only way to know which utilities are buried in your area.”
