Instant Peay Play: Former APSU Gov Morgan Rackel ends summer with silver medal at Pan Am Games

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – To say former Austin Peay State University (APSU) softball standout Morgan Rackel has had a heck of a run over the past few months would be an understatement, as she wrapped up her summer by winning a silver medal last week as part of Team Canada at the 2019 Pan America Games in Lima, Peru.

The Calgary, Alberta native was a part of the silver medal winning team that posted an overall record of 5-2 at the games, with their only two losses coming to the top-ranked team in the world, Team USA, by a 6-1 final in the preliminary round and 3-1 in the gold medal game, while defeating Puerto Pico (3-1), Venezuela (8-0), Peru (7-0), Mexico (4-0) and Team USA (3-1).

Rackel, who was the youngest player on the squad by almost two years, made one appearance during the games, coming out of the bullpen in relief versus host nation Peru and throwing two perfect innings in retiring all six batters she faced and earning a save.

The silver medal win came after Rackel had become the first player in Austin Peay program history to sign a professional contract to play softball earlier this summer, signing with the Canadian Wild of Southern Illinois of the National Pro Fastpitch League – based out of Marion, IL.

Rackel helped lead the Wild to a third-place finish in the league’s final standings (22-20-1) – the team’s first year to play in the league – while individually posting a 2-3 overall record, with a team-high tying three saves, and a 2.47 ERA to go with 24 strikeouts in 39.2 innings pitched.

During her time with the Wild this summer, Rackel was named the league’s Rookie of the Week and is a finalist for the league’s Defensive Play of the Year for her diving catch versus the Chicago Bandits.

Prior to signing with the Wild, Rackel took home several honors following her final season with the Governors, as she became the program’s first Google Cloud Academic All-America ® Division I First team selection, a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Central Region Third-Team selection and Ohio Valley Conference First-Team pick.

The final two honors mark the second straight year Rackel was so named.

So, as the summer comes to a close and if someone asks Morgan how her summer when, boy will she have a story to tell.
