Washington, D.C. – Today, Tuesday, September 24th, 2019, U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) joined CNBC’s Squawk Box to discuss the Senate Judiciary Committee’s upcoming hearing on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights.
“It is important to exercise some preemptions so you are not looking at fifty different standards, but you have a basic privacy standard…to make certain that this virtual space is competitive [and] that innovation continues,” said Senator Blackburn.
“The GDPR went too far…. The California [Consumer Privacy Act] goes too far…. So you have to come back and say, ‘How do you do something that is light-touch?’”, stated Blackburn.
“Whether it is [on the] Judiciary Committee or the Tech Task Force… we are being thoughtful. We are talking to privacy directors. We are talking to leadership in these different companies to say, ‘How do we strike this right balance?’ because the decisions that are made here affect every industrial sector,” Blackburn commented.
