APSU Men’s Golf has top ten finish at J.T. Poston Invitational

Sapphire Valley, NC – Tuesday was a long day for Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s golf team, with much of the second round to play before a sprint to the finish in the J.T. Poston Invitational at The Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

The Govs placed eighth as a team but were agonizingly close to their first top-five finish in this event; a few putts here and there and Austin Peay State University’s 846 (277-280-289) could’ve been Central Arkansas’ 841—or better.

Georgia Southern (805) won the team event and set the 54-hole team scoring record for the Western Carolina-hosted event.

Junior Chase Korte jumped nine spots in the final round to earn a top-10 finish thanks to a final-round 67, finishing at 206 (68-71-67) overall. Korte eagled No. 8 in the final round, which played as the third-hardest hole for the tournament, helping his par-4 scoring average to a team-best 3.82 strokes per hole.

Senior Michael Busse just missed a top-20 finish, settling for 22nd with a four-under 209 (70-65-74).  His second-round 65 was tied for the third-best round in the tournament and included seven birdies—more than half his team-high 13 for the tournament.

Despite an opening-round 66, senior Austin Lancaster found the going tougher later in the tournament, finishing with a one-over 214 (66-73-75). Sophomore Micah Knisley (79-71-73—223) and freshman Tate Dickerson (73-77-75—225) rounded out the Austin Peay lineup, with Knisley’s final-round 73 second among Govs behind only Korte.

The Govs will take a week off before returning to action at the 2019 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee.
