APSU and CMCSS launched the major partnership in 2018 to become the state’s first public education institutions to offer both Japanese and Korean language courses to students.

The new classes, funded by grants from The Japan Foundation and the ALLEX Foundation, were developed to better serve the Japanese- and Korean-owned businesses investing in this region.

“Whenever I have an opportunity to say a few words in Tennessee, I like to speak about the strong relationship between the state and Japan,” Kobayashi stated. “Thanks to the support of community leaders, the number of Japanese companies in Tennessee has grown to 200.”

CMCSS and APSU will utilize this grant funding to continue supporting the Japanese language partnership. Currently, the two institutions share an instructor, Dr. Mitsutoshi Inaba, who spends 60 percent of his time at APSU and 40 percent of his time at Clarksville High School’s Academy of Business and Finance.

“Each year Japan funds assistance grants to support Japanese language programs through the Japan Foundation,” Kobayashi said. “I am pleased to present this grant to Austin Peay and Clarksville High School to continue their grassroots partnership.”
