APSU Soccer falls 2-1 at Tennessee Tech

APSU Soccer - Austin Peay State UniversityCookeville, TN – Senior Melody Fisher’s first career goal wasn’t enough for Austin Peay State University (APSU) soccer, as a pair of Tennessee Tech goals in the last ten minutes did the Governors in, Sunday, at Tech Soccer Field.

Despite a season-high six saves from Mary Parker Powell, the Governors were unable to hold a one goal advantage, and fell to 1-3-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play.

The Govs scored first when Fisher put a header in the back of the net off a Claire Larose corner kick. But an 83rd minute goal for Tennessee Tech tied it up, before an 88th minute penalty kick goal proved to be the winner for the Golden Eagles.

Four first half saves from senior keeper Mary Parker Powell highlighted a scoreless first half at Tech Soccer Field. The Governors fired six shots in the first half, with Fisher and Anna McPhie each adding a shot on goal.

It was a quick start to the second half, when Fisher scored her career’s first goal, outjumping everyone on the field to put a header past the Golden Eagle keeper. It was the first time Fisher has recorded a point since she had an assist in her 2016 freshman season.

Larose, assisting on the Fisher goal, recorded her third point of the weekend and sixth of the season. It was Larose’s second assist of the season, which ties her for the team lead with Abigail Gemza.

The Governors held the lead until the final ten minutes of the half, when an 83rd minute goal from Tennessee Tech’s Kaitie Shipley tied the game at one. In the 88th minute, a Governor’s foul in the penalty box gave the Golden Eagles a penalty kick, which Nora Vicsek converted. The penalty kick goal proved to be the game winner as the Governors fell, 2-1.

The season-high six saves from Mary Parker Powell bests her previous season high of five, which she recorded four times.

APSU Coach Naomi Kolarova Thoughts

Opening Remarks
“Definitely wasn’t a good performance from us today. We didn’t use the momentum of scoring to our advantage and we gave the ball away too much in key areas after that. We also gave up two goals the last ten minutes, something we’ve struggled with all year.”

Moving Forward
“We have to bounce back for next week now, try to refocus & zone in on how to beat Jacksonville State on Friday.”

Next Up For APSU Soccer

The APSU Soccer team will be back in action Friday when they conclude a three-game road swing with a 7:00pm match at Jacksonville State. The Governors will get next Sunday off, before heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
