Glencoe, AL – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) women golf team had to battle for everything it achieved on the first day of competition at the Chris Banister Classic, withstanding both some early-morning weather and an unfortunate bit of bad luck over the opening 36 holes.
With a 638, the APSU Govs (318-320) are tied with Tennessee Tech for seventh overall. Troy (593) and Murray State (598) are the only squads below 600, with host Jacksonville State in fourth at 614.
Sophomore Shelby Darnell emerged from Monday as the big performer for the Govs; her 153 (77-76) has her just outside the top-10, while her 26 pars led the tournament through 36 holes. She led the Govs in both par-4 (4.35 strokes per hole) and par-5 (5.13 strokes/hole) and put together the best two rounds by a Gov on Monday.
After a tough opening-round 83, sophomore Taylor Dedmen’s second-round 77 vaulted her nine spots up the leaderboard and into 35th. Junior Riley Cooper (80-82—162) was two shots and one spot behind Dedmen on the leaderboard, while junior Andrea Presilla (83-85—168) rounded out the day for the APSU Govs, averaging an even-par 3.00 strokes on par-3 holes, tied for fifth in the tournament.
After carding a solid opening-round 78, junior Meghann Stamps was forced out of the competition due to injury; her loss left the Govs counting all four remaining players for the second and third round in the team score.
Austin Peay State University returns to action Tuesday for the final 18 holes at Silver Lakes Golf Course. The Govs will go off Hole No. 10 in the 8:24am-9:00am slots, paired with Elon and North Alabama.
