Titans Score Dramatic Victory Over Chargers

Tennessee TitansThe Tennessee Titans hosted the Los Angeles Chargers last week and earned a dramatic 23-20 win.

A goal-line stand by the Titans defense in the final minute of play preserved the victory, concluding when linebacker Wesley Woodyard forced a fumble and defensive tackle Jurrell Casey recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchback. The ball carrier, Melvin Gordon III, was initially ruled down by contact, but an officials’ review reversed the call in favor of the Titans.

The Titans tied a franchise record by not allowing an opponent to score more than 20 points during their first seven games, matching the 2000 squad. Another such effort in Week 8 will set a new Titans/Oilers benchmark. Only three other NFL teams this season have held opponents to 20 or fewer points every week: the Titans, the New England Patriots (six games through Oct. 20) and the San Francisco 49ers (six games).

Meanwhile, quarterback Ryan Tannehill made his first start of the season against the Chargers as well as his first start in a Titans uniform. Tannehill, who was acquired in a trade with the Miami Dolphins during the offseason, passed for 312 yards with touchdown tosses to wide receivers Corey Davis and Tajaé Sharpe. Tannehill’s 79.3 completion percentage (23-of-29) set a career high for games with a minimum of 20 attempts.

Running back Derrick Henry rushed for 90 yards on 22 carries and scored on an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter.

About the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay BuccaneersBruce Arians is in his first season as the head coach of the Buccaneers. The two-time Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year previously spent five seasons (2013–2017) as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Arians will have 14 days to prepare his club for the matchup in Tennessee after enjoying a bye last week. The last time Tampa Bay played was October 13th in London against the NFC South rival Carolina Panthers.

Against the Panthers, Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston threw for 400 yards, but his team was victimized for seven total turnovers. The Panthers took the game by a final score of 37-26.

Winston was the first-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, at which time current Titans general manager Jon Robinson served as the club’s director of player personnel. In five NFL seasons, Winston has passed for 16,399 yards, 100 touchdowns and 68 interceptions with an 87.5 passer rating.
