Austin Peay State University Women’s Golf have solid start at Town and Country Invitational

APSU Women's GolfNashville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s golf finds itself in contention with 18 to play at the Town and Country Invitational in Nashville, sharing a spot in the top-five thanks to strong across the board performances.

The Govs are tied for fifth alongside Belmont at 295, within 10 shots of Lipscomb (285) at the top spot, with Troy (286), Cumberland (291) and Morehead State (294) all in contention.

“We started playing some good golf on the back, and we were letting shots happen instead of making shots happen,” said Austin Peay head coach Jessica Cathey. “That gave us a lot of confidence and we finished strong.”

Taking the top spot for the Govs on Monday was sophomore Taylor Dedmen, who opened play with a 72, including back-to-back birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 as part of a one-under 34 on the back nine.

In her return from layoff due to injury, senior Meghann Stamps joined sophomore Shelby Darnell in the top-20. Stamps (73) equaled Dedmen’s team-high marks in pars (13) and par-3 scoring (3.00), while Darnell (74) birdied the difficult par-4 No. 14, one of just five in 48 attempts at the hole on Monday.

Junior Riley Cooper (76) and freshman Payton Elkins (79) rounded out the lineup for the Govs to open play. Cooper’s 5.00 average on par-5 holes was one shot off the tournament lead, while Elkins scored back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 to salvage her front nine.

As the individual, junior Andrea Presilla carded a 77, including a one-under showing from Holes No. 7-15.

“The greens were a little slower than we were used to, so we’re having to adjust to the speed which is always a challenge wherever you go,” Cathey said. “We left a few dead in the hole, so if we get those rolling a little better tomorrow we can drop four or five shots.”

The Govs will be back in action as a fivesome, beginning 10:00am, Tuesday, at McCabe Golf Course.
