Chattanooga, TN – Over the past three days, Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s tennis competed in its final event of the fall schedule, the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic.
The Governors kicked off their final event of the fall, Friday, against UNC Asheville.
In doubles action, Jacob Lorino and Thiago Nogueira beat the Bulldog’s Edward Colclough and Charlie Morkely, 6-2.
The Govs dropped four singles matches to the Bulldogs, but in an extra doubles match, Lorino teamed up with Anton Damberg to knock off Quinn Fender and Finlay McFadyen, 6-1.
North Alabama was next on the slate for the Govs, who would win both doubles matches over the Lions. Lorino and freshman Thiago Nogueira got things started, beating Andreas Hansen and George Markos, 7-5. Then the Governors European duo of Damberg and Julius Gold teamed up to beat Cian Maguire and Cade Reasons, 6-2
In singles play against North Alabama, Lorino and Gold each picked up another win for the Govs. Lorino won his match handily, beating Tim Heslin, 6-1 6-2. Gold played in a much closer match against Andreas Hansen, but came away with a win, 7-5 7-6(4).
Against the host-school Chattanooga, Damberg, Lorino, and Nogueira all dropped singles matches. In the doubles matches against the Mocs, Damberg and Gold fell, 6-4, and Lorino and Nogueira also fell, 6-4.
On the final day of the tournament, the Governors matched up with Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois. Damberg and Gold won their doubles match, easily defeating the Panther’s duo of Christos Kyrillou and Gertjan De Wilder, 6-1. Lorino and Nogueira dropped a close a match to Daniel Hernandez and Logan Charbonneau, 6-4.
In the final singles action of the tournament, Damberg and Nogueira eached dropped a match to the Panthers, wrapping up the Governors fall season.
Lorino led the Govs in the final weekend, winning a singles match and three doubles matches. Damberg and Gold each won three times, with Damberg picking up all of his wins in doubles action. Gold won twice in doubles and added a singles win to cap off his fall season.
