Clarksville, TN – For the first time this season Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s basketball will play a nationally televised game on the SEC Network when they take on the Kentucky Wildcats at 3:00pm, Sunday, in Memorial Coliseum.
The Governors enter Sunday’s contest on a two game winning streak, having knocked off Evansville, 80-64, and Chattanooga, 50-49.
Sunday’s game at Kentucky will be the second leg of a five-game road trip for the Governors, who will travel to Huntsville, Alabama for a 2:00pm matchup with Alabama A&M.
About the Kentucky Wildcats
After finishing fourth in the Southeastern Conference a season ago, the Wildcats were tabbed to finished there again by the coaches and the media in the 2019-20 season. In the 2019 SEC Tournament, Kentucky was the No. 4 seed and received a bye to the quarterfinals, where they fell to eventual runner-up No. 10 seed Arkansas. As a 6-seed in the NCAA Tournament, Kentucky won one game before falling to NC State in the Round of 32.
Kentucky sophomore Rhyne Howard was the 2019 SEC Freshman of the Year and an All-SEC First Team selection. Nationally, she was honored as the espnW Freshman of the Year, the WBCA Freshman of the Year, the USBWA National Freshman of the Year and the SEC Newcomer of the Year (AP).
This season, Howard was selected to the Preseason All-SEC teams by the coaches and media. She leads the Wildcats, averaging 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, and has scored 24 (vs. Morehead State, November 21st) and 27 points (vs. Grambling State, November 26th) in her last two games. Redshirt senior, Sabrina Haines, is the Wildcats second leading scorer, averaging 11.2 points per game.
Series History
In 2003-04, the Governors made the trek north to Lexington to take on the Wildcats in the first season of the Andy Blackston era. Austin Peay State University would fall to Kentucky, 56-82, but Blackston would lead the Governors to a 23-8 (14-2 OVC) record and their second straight OVC Regular- Season title.
What to watch for
The Governors rank 34th in the NCAA and lead the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring offense (79.5 ppg), averaging 7.9 more points per game than anybody else in the OVC.
Nationally the Governors rank sixth in three-pointers per game (11) and total three-pointers made (66). The APSU Govs have also attempted the 6th most three-point shots (197) in the NCAA this season.
In the OVC, the APSU Governors lead the conference in three-point field goals made, three-point percentage, and three-pointers attempted.
Maggie Knowles (18), Shay-Lee Kirby (15), and Tahanee Bennell (13) all sit in the top seven in the OVC in total made three-point field goals.
Austin Peay State University leads the OVC, averaging 15.5 assists per game. The Governors have also dished out 16 more assists than any other team in the conference
For the second time in David Midlick‘s five years at Austin Peay State University, the Govs are off to a 5-1 start to the season.
