APSU Basketball’s Tahanee Bennell named OVC Newcomer of the Week, Again

APSU Women's BasketballBrentwood, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s basketball freshman Tahanee Bennell has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season.

Bennell, a native of Turners Beach, Tasmania, Australia, was named Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season, after leading the Govs to the FIU Holiday Hoops Showdown title last week.

Bennell was also named to the FIU Holiday Hoops Showdown All-Tournament team and took home tournament MVP honors.

On the trip to Miami, Bennell averaged nine points and 5.5 assists in the Governors two wins. In the opening round win over Binghamton, Bennell scored a team-high 15 points, while dishing out a team-high six assists. In the comeback win over Florida International in the tournament title game, Bennell facilitated the Govs offense, with a team-high five assists.

By picking up her second OVC Newcomer of the Week award, Bennell becomes the first Governor to take home multiple OVC Weekly honors in the same season since Brianah Ferby won Freshman of the Week twice in the 2017-18 season. Bennell is the first Gov to win the Newcomer of the Week award twice in the same since 2007-08, when Janay Armstrong won the award twice.

Bennell and the rest of the Governors will take a couple of days off for Christmas, before they tip-off a 2:00pm, Sunday, contest against Illinois State in the Dunn Center.
