Austin Peay State University Basketball’s Arielle Gonzalez-Varner, Shay-Lee Kirby earn OVC Weekly Honors

APSU Women's BasketballBrentwood, TN – For the second time this season, two Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s basketball players picked up Ohio Valley Conference weekly honors in the same week. Arielle Gonzalez-Varner was named Player of the Week and Shay-Lee Kirby was named Co-Freshman of the Week.

Gonzalez-Varner picked up her season’s first OVC Player of the Week award, and the second of her career.

The senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, led the Govs in an overtime win against Illinois State, posting 20 points and pulling down 17 rebounds. It was Gonzalez-Varner’s second 20-point performance and fourth double-double of the season.

Kirby picked up her second OVC Freshman of the Week award of the season and her career. The freshman from Vienna, West Virginia, knocked down a team-high three three-pointers against Illinois State, en route to 11-points in the contest. Kirby has now scored in double-figures in all four of the Govs home games.

This is the second time this season two Governors have taken home OVC Weekly Awards in the same week. On the first week of the season, November 12th, Kirby won Freshman of the Week and Tahanee Bennell won Newcomer of the Week. 

The Governors will kick off OVC play at 5:30pm, Thursday, when they take on Southeast Missouri in the Dunn Center. They will follow that with a 1:30pm, Saturday, matchup against UT Martin.
