APSU Women's BasketballClarksville, TN – Set to wrap up a four-game Ohio Valley Conference road trip, the Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s basketball team will make one last stop for a 2:00pm, Saturday, contest against UT Martin in the Elam Center.

The Governors have been on the road for two weeks, with their last game in Clarksville coming against UT Martin, January 4th.

After Saturday’s tilt with the Skyhawks, the Governors will return home for a four-game home stand that will kick off with a 5:30pm, January 23rd, game against Tennessee State in the Dunn Center.

About the UT Martin Skyhawks

Since the start of conference play, UT Martin has been the best team in the Ohio Valley Conference. After going 4-7 during non-conference action, the Skyhawks have rattled off five-straight wins to open league play, as they sit in a tie with Tennessee Tech atop the OVC standings.

UT Martin leads the OVC in scoring since the start of the conference season, averaging 83.6 points per team — 13.6 more points per game than second-ranked Southeast Missouri. The Skyhawks offense has been led by Chelsey Perry, who is averaging an OVC-best 26.8 points per game in conference play. Perry also leads the league in three-point percentage (50%) and blocked shots (21) during OVC action. Maddie Waldrop ranks fifth in league during OVC play, averaging 16.4 points per game. The Skyhawks are the only team in the OVC with a pair of players in the top-five in the league in scoring during OVC action.

Perry and Waldrop have been a force on the glass during conference play as well, averaging 10 and 9.4 rebounds per game, the Skyhawks duo ranks fourth and fifth in the OVC during conference play.

During conference action, UT Martin has posted a plus 21.8 scoring margin — Tennessee Tech has the second best scoring margin at plus 13.4. The Skyhawks have been efficient in scoring from all over the court, shooting OVC-bests 47.5 percent from the floor and 35.7 percent from three-point range.

APSU’s Last Game Against UT Martin

Austin Peay State University welcomed UT Martin to the Dunn Center on January 4th, for the opening week of Ohio Valley Conference play, as the Governors fell to the Skyhawks, 69-61. The game was a battle between Preseason All-OVC selections — Arielle Gonzalez-Varner for the Govs, and Chelsey Perry and Maddie Waldrop for UT Martin.

Gonzalez-Varner scored a season-high 22 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for the APSU Governors. The senior from Cincinnati shot 69 percent (9-of-13) from the floor. Freshman Ella Sawyer chipped in another nine points for the Govs, knocking down a career-high three three-pointers in the contest.

For UT Martin it was the Perry and Waldrop show, as the duo combined for 50 points and 27 rebounds. Perry also blocked five shots, while Waldrop recorded four steals.

What to Watch For

Austin Peay State University leads the OVC in three-point field goals made (135) and three-pointers attempted (434). They are third in the league in three-point percentage (31.1%).

The Governors rank third in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring offense (68.3 ppg).

Nationally, the APSU Govs rank 24th in three-point field goals made per game (8.4).

The Govs have deployed a full-court press this season that is forcing 20.5 turnovers per game. That ranks 28th in the NCAA and leads the OVC.

The APSU Governors rank third in the OVC with a plus 3.38 turnover margin and are the only team in the conference that averages 20 or more forced turnovers per game.

Senior Arielle Gonzalez-Varner scored 10 points against Southeast Missouri last time out, marking the 10th time this season she has scored in double-figures this season.

In OVC play, Ella Sawyer is tied for second among freshman in scoring, averaging 10.2 points per game.

Last time out Gonzalez-Varner led the Governors in scoring (10 points) and assists (4) — marking the first time this season she has led the way in points and assists in the same game.

The Governors are one of four teams in the OVC that has a positive scoring margin (+0.8), rebounding margin (+1.3), and turnover margin (+3.38).

Austin Peay State University is looking to pick up its first win against UT Martin since January 1st, 2018. The APSU Govs are looking for their first win at UT Martin since January 8th, 2009.

The Governors are set to wrap up a 19-day, four -game OVC road trip when they take on Southeast Missouri and UT Martin this weekend.
