APSU Women’s Tennis sweeps Dayton, Wright State

APSU Women's TennisDayton, OH – It was a perfect weekend on the road for the Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis, as the Governors posted a pair of 7-0 sweeps against Dayton, Friday, and Wright State, Saturday, to improve their winning streak to five matches.

In doubles action against Dayton on Friday night, the Governors No. 2 pairing of Fabienne Schmidt and Aleks Topalovic got on the board first, posting a decisive 6-1 win over the Flyers No. 2 duo.

Needing just one more win to wrap up the doubles point, the APSU Govs top duo of Danielle Morris and Jana Leder knocked off the Flyer’s No. 1 duo to claim the doubles point in the match.

The Governors No. 3 duo of Ana Albertson and Sarah Heckel were also leading their match, 5-4, but the match was left unfinished after the Govs won the doubles point.

In singles play, it didn’t take APSU long to get on the board, as Schmidt handily won the No. 1 matchup to get on the board first. The No. 4 singles match wrapped up next, with Topalovic picking up a win to give the Governors a 3-0 lead.

The No. 5 singles match proved to be the match winner, as freshman Sarah Heckel defeated the No. 5 player from Dayton, giving the Govs a 4-0 lead. But the Governors were not done yet, as Leder won the No. 3 singles matchup, Morris won in the No. 2 match, and Albertson won the No. 6 match.

The Govs improved to 4-1 on the season after their 7-0 sweep of the Dayton Flyers. Saturday, the Govs were back in action against the Raiders of Wright State, in a match that proved to be similar to Friday nights.

Albertson and Heckel wrapped up their doubles match first against Wright State, as the Governors No. 3 pairing picked up a 6-2 win. The second doubles match to wrap up saw the Governors No. 1 pairing of Morris and Leder fall to the No. 1 duo from Wright State.

With the doubles point coming down to the No. 2 doubles line, Schmidt and Topalovic picked up a big 6-2 win to claim the doubles point for the Governors.

In singles play, a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win from Heckel in the No. 5 position gave the Govs the first singles point of the match. Topalovic was the second match on the board, knocking off Wright State’s No. 4, 6-4 6-3, to give the Governors a 3-0 advantage in the match.

Needing just one more point to pick up their second win of the weekend, the Governors lone senior picked up the match clinching point, as Albertson knocked off the No. 6 from Wright State, 6-4 6-3.

With the match in hand, Morris and Schmidt picked up another pair of wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 lines. In the final match of the weekend, Leder picked up a hard-fought win in a marathon of a match to give the Govs their second 7-0 sweep of the weekend.

By picking up a pair of singles win this weekend, Schmidt and Leder each improved to 6-0 in singles play in the spring. Schmidt has won eight-straight matches dating back to the fall season, and Leder has yet to drop a singles match in her Austin Peay State University career.

Morris also won twice, improving to 5-1 while playing exclusively in the No. 2 position during her sophomore campaign. Alberton, Topalovic, and Heckel all improved to 3-1 this spring in singles play, after picked up a pair of wins each this weekend.

In doubles play, the duo of Albertson and Heckel improved to 4-0 this spring, while playing all of their matches in the No. 3 position. Schmidt and Topalovic improved to 5-1 as a duo this spring, while Morris and Leder picked went 1-1 on the weekend, moving to 3-3 as a duo in the spring season.

Next Up For APSU Women’s Tennis

The Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team will be back in action for a 12:00pm, Tuesday match at the Governors Tennis Center against Cumberland. Then the APSU Govs will welcome Carson Newman to Clarksville for an 11:00am, Friday match.
