Marsha Blackburn Report: This Week From Washington – February 9th, 2020

The Great American Comeback In Action

U.S. SenateWashington, D.C. – Regardless of your background, the American dream is yours to make. David Goggins is an inspiration and exemplifies this idea of the great American comeback.

He overcame adversity, poverty, and personal fears to turn his life around and serve our nation as a Navy SEAL, and in other roles in the military, for over 20 years.

This week, Goggins joined me as my guest for the State of the Union address

Back To Work For Tennesseans

Impeachment is finally over! For months, Congress was forced into limbo while the Speaker of the House and the Senate minority leader fixated on removing President Donald Trump from office. This week, I voted to acquit the President and (hopefully) put this political circus to bed. It’s time we get back to work making everyday life better for Tennesseans.

We need to focus on expanding broadband connectivity and implementing policies to ensure rural communities have access to quality health care. We will also take new steps to protect online privacy and the ‘Virtual You,’ and build on the success of last year’s efforts to strengthen our national defense.

Combating The Coronavirus

Reforms enacted in Congress last year to improve federal, state, and local preparedness and response programs — covering natural disasters, an emerging infectious disease, or a bioterror attack — have put the U.S. in a better position to respond to the coronavirus outbreak.

The legislation also created the Children’s Preparedness Unit at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ensure we protect the most vulnerable members of our communities.

In the Senate, we recently introduced legislation to establish a Ready Reserve Corps to ensure we have the doctors and nurses needed during a public health emergency. It is my hope that it will move through Congress promptly.

Female Genital Mutilation: A Human Rights Violation

Around 200 million women and girls are victims of the grotesque practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). Senators Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and I introduced a resolution to denounce FGM as a human rights violation.

This disgusting practice must stop. Last year, I introduced legislation to close loopholes and ensure perpetrators of FGM can be brought to justice even after they cross state lines.

Protecting The Sanctity of Life

This week, I co-sponsored Senator Mike Lee’s (R-Utah) legislation to prevent taxpayer dollars from being used to fund abortions overseas. I also joined Senator Bill Cassidy’s (R-La.) bill to prevent dangerous teleabortions. Continuing to fight for the sanctity of life at all stages will always remain a priority of mine.

A Strong Economy For All

We’re hiring! signs are showing up all across the country and especially here in Tennessee. Last month 225,000 new jobs were added to the economy and in 2019, the U.S. trade deficit decreased for the first time in 6 years.

Tennessee Tuesday

Senator Alexander and I are eager to welcome visiting Tennesseans to our nation’s capital.
