APSU Men’s Tennis hosts Cumberland, North Alabama this week

APSU Men's TennisClarksville, TN – After picking up their first win of the season last time out, the Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s tennis will look to grab a another pair of wins when they host a noon, Tuesday, match against Cumberland and a 2:00pm, Saturday match against North Alabama at the Governors Tennis Center.

The Govs picked up their first win of the season against Carson-Newman, 4-3, knocking off the Eagles last Friday.

After dropping the doubles point, the APSU Govs three of the first four singles matches to take the lead.

But Carson-Newman would eventually square the match at 3-3, before Jacob Lorino picked up a decisive match-clinching singles point to get the Governors in the win column.

In doubles play, the Governors No. 2 duo of Anton Damberg and Julius Gold picked up their first win of the spring season against Carson-Newman. Dating back to the fall season, Damberg and Gold have more wins together than any other Govs duo, having won seven times.

Jacob Lorino and Christian Edison played as the No. 1 duo against Carson-Newman, while Hunter Sanders and Thiago Nogueira played together for the first time in the No. 3 position.

In singles play, the Govs top-three of Edison, Damberg, and Gold all picked up wins last time out. Edison picked up his second win of the spring, and dating back to the fall season he leads Austin Peay State University with eight singles wins. It was the first win of the spring for Damberg and Gold, who both have five wins dating back to the fall season.

Playing as the No. 5, Lorino picked up his second-straight win, he ranks second on the team with six wins this year.  Oliver Andersson, who has been the Governors No. 4 singles player for the majority of the season, fell in his match last time out.

The duo of Hunter Sanders and Nogueira have split time in the No. 6 position, with Sanders getting the nod against Carson-Newman.

 

The Opposition

Cumberland (5-6)

Last Meeting: The Governors beat Cumberland, 6-1, at the Governors Tennis Center on February 5th, 2019.

The No. 14 team in the 2020 NAIA Men’s Tennis Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, Cumberland is off to a 5-6 start to their season. The Phoenixes lost las time out, falling on the road to No. 23 Northwestern Ohio, 4-0. Cumberland has matched up with a pair of Ohio Valley Conference foes this spring, falling to Belmont, 7-0, and Tennessee State, 6-1.

North Alabama (1-8)

Last Meeting: North Alabama knocked off Austin Peay State University, 5-2, at the UNA Varsity Tennis Courts in Florence, Alabama, on March 26th, 2019.

After dropping their first eight matches of the season, North Alabama picked up a win against USC-Upstate, 4-3, in their last match. Before the Lions make the trip to Clarksville, Saturday, they will host OVC foe Jacksonville State on Wednesday.

Next Up APSU Men’s Tennis

After the pair of matches this week, the Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team will conclude a four-match home stand by hosting a 2:00pm, February 27th, match against Martin Methodist at the Governors Tennis Center. After hosting the Redhawks, the Govs will head back on the road a 2:30pm, Saturday match at IUPUI.
