Tennessee Vols fall to Vanderbilt 42-24

Tennessee Volunteers - UT VolsKnoxville, TN – The Tennessee Volunteers concluded the 2017 football season Saturday with a 42-24 loss to Vanderbilt at Neyland Stadium in front of 83,117. 

After a close start, Vanderbilt (5-7, 1-7 SEC) took a 21-14 lead shortly before halftime with a touchdown. While Tennessee (4-8, 0-8) came within four points on a 49-yard field goal by Aaron Medley, the Commodores pulled away and eventually out-gained Tennessee 529 to 238 yards. 

Vanderbilt quarterback Kyle Shurmur completed 20-of-31 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns, and running back Ralph Webb rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns.

Tennessee Vols fall to LSU at Neyland Stadium

Tennessee Volunteers - UT VolsKnoxville, TN – Tennessee out-gained 20th-ranked LSU, 287-281, but a pair of Vol turnovers and the Tigers’ strong rushing attack proved to be the difference in a 30-10 win for LSU on a damp Saturday night, November 18th at Neyland Stadium.
 
With an announced crowd of 96,888 on hand despite gusting winds and heavy rain in the forecast, UT redshirt freshman quarterback Jarrett Guarantano shrugged off the elements to finish 13-of-23 for 239 yards and a touchdown. UT’s defense also showed some bright spots, limiting LSU to zero first downs in the opening quarter and seven by halftime as the Vols entered the break trailing 17-10.

Tennessee Vols lose at Missouri, 50-17

Tennessee Volunteers - UT VolsColumbia, MO – The Tennessee Volunteers dropped their final road SEC game of the season, 50-17, on Saturday night to Missouri as true freshman quarterback Will McBride made his first career start for the Big Orange.

Tennessee (4-6, 0-6 SEC) now holds a 2-4 all-time record against Missouri (5-5, 2-4 SEC), including a 1-2 record in Columbia.
 
In his first start, McBride completed 16 of 32 passes for 139 yards and rushed for 63 yards on 14 carries. He’s the first Tennessee quarterback to lead the team in rushing yards since VFL Joshua Dobbs ran for a team-high 118 yards against Nebraska in the Music City Bowl on December 30th, 2016.

Tennessee Vols Football beats Southern Miss, 24-10

 

Tennessee took home its fourth consecutive Homecoming win as the Vols defeated Southern Miss, 24-10

Tennessee Volunteers - UT VolsKnoxville, TN – With the defense forcing two third-quarter turnovers and the offense converting those opportunities into 14 points, Tennessee broke open a tight game and surged past Southern Miss, 24-10, Saturday night in the annual Homecoming game at Neyland Stadium.

With an announced crowd of 95,551 on hand, UT improved to 4-5 on the season, thanks to a pair of rushing touchdowns from junior tailback John Kelly and another from redshirt freshman quarterback Jarrett Guarantano. With their second-straight loss, the Golden Eagles fell to 5-4 this season.

Tennessee Football comes up short against South Carolina, 15-9

Tennessee Volunteers - UT VolsKnoxville, TN – Tennessee grabbed an early lead over South Carolina, fell behind late and came up two yards short of a furious last-second rally, dropping a 15-9 decision Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 98,104 at Neyland Stadium.
 
Redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano, making his first start at quarterback, guided the Vols 73 yards in the final one minute, 13 seconds without a timeout.  He and his teammates came up just short of an incredible comeback, as UT (3-3/0-3 SEC) was unable to connect on three pass attempts from the two-yard line.

Tennessee Vols Football slides past UMass, 17-13

Tennessee Volunteers - UT VolsKnoxville, TN – John Kelly rushed for 101 yards and Quinten Dormady threw for 187 yards as Tennessee held on to defeat UMass 17-13 in front of a crowd of 95,324 at Neyland Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Tennessee (3-1, 0-1 SEC) got off to a slow start in the opening quarter, but turned things up in the second quarter by scoring two touchdowns to take a 14-6 lead into the half.

“We needed to get win number three, and we got win number three,” said head coach Butch Jones. “At the end of the day it’s all about getting the victory, but the performance was just flat out unacceptable and we’ll get back to work tonight and we will work to correct it.”

Tennessee Vols Football beats Georgia Tech in Double Overtime Thriller

Tennessee Volunteers - UT VolsAtlanta, GA – Tennessee junior John Kelly dashed for four touchdowns and picked up 128 of UT’s 148 rushing yards on the ground en route to a double overtime victory against Georgia Tech in the Vols’ season opening Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Monday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Tennessee went into overtime for the second-consecutive season opener, using three rushes and an extra point by Aaron Medley to score in the first period after Georgia Tech crossed the plane on their possession to keep the game tied, 35-35.

#21 Tennessee Vols beat Nebraska Cornhuskers 38-24 in the Music City Bowl

Tennessee Volunteers - UT VolsNashville, TN Joshua Dobbs racked up 409 yards of total offense and four touchdowns, Derek Barnett set a new Tennessee sack record and the No. 21 Tennessee Volunteers took a 38-24 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the 2016 Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl on Friday at Nissan Stadium.

Tennessee (9-4) led from start to finish and posted 521 yards of offense thanks to Dobbs’ outstanding career finale. Dobbs, who was named MVP of the game, ran for 118 yards and three scores on 11 carries and finished 23-of-38, throwing for 291 yards and one touchdown.

Vanderbilt Commodores stun #24 Tennessee Vols, 45-34

Tennessee Volunteers - UT VolsNashville, TN – Vanderbilt 6-6 (3-5) topped No. 24/24 Tennessee 8-4 (4-4) in an offensive slug fest on Saturday, taking a 45-34 win over the Volunteers at Vanderbilt Stadium.

The Vols (8-4, 4-4 SEC) and the Commodores (6-6, 3-5 SEC) traded scores all night before Vanderbilt pulled away with a 14-point fourth quarter. Tennessee, which is No. 19 in the College Football Playoff rankings, led 31-24 at the half. Vanderbilt outscored UT 21-3 in the second half.

On the final play of the second quarter, junior defensive end Derek Barnett registered his career-best 12th sack of the season and the 32nd of his career to tie the great Reggie White for the most career sacks in Tennessee history.
