Austin Peay State University GovernorsPaducah, KY – Experience outlasted youth in Sunday’s Ohio Valley Conference Tennis Championship match as Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team dropped a 4-1 match to Eastern Kentucky.

As regular-season champions, the Colonels (21-4) entered the tournament as the outright favorite, sporting an undefeated league record and a team comprised of juniors and seniors. In fact, the 2011 title was the second-straight for EKU and, like they did last season, the Colonels will represent the OVC in the NCAA Tennis Championships.

Govs Tennis downs TTU, advances to OVC title match

Austin Peay State University GovernorsPaducah, KY – Freshman Jasmin Ademovic closed a three-set match with a win to put Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team on top of Tennessee Tech, 4-1, in Ohio Valley Conference Tournament semifinal action, Saturday, at the Larry J. Heflin Tennis Center.

The win moves the Govs (14-5) into the OVC Tournament championship match for the first time since 1987, where they face regular-season champion Eastern Kentucky at 2:00pm, Sunday

Tennis Govs No. 2 seed in upcoming OVC Tournament

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team has earned a first-round bye in the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Tennis Championships as the No. 2 seed. The Govs open tourney play with a 2:00pm, Saturday, match against the winner of No. 3 Tennessee Tech and #6 Murray State, at Larry J. Heflin Tennis Center in Paducah, KY.

Regular-season champion Eastern Kentucky is the top seed, playing the winner of No. 4 Jacksonville State and No. 5 Morehead State.  The opening matches begin at 10:00am, Friday.

Consistency and depth push Tennis Govs in win against JSU

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team locked up its second-straight Ohio Valley Conference Tournament appearance with a 6-1 OVC win against Jacksonville State, Friday, at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts.

With a young team, made of three sophomores and three freshmen, head coach Malik Tabet has the Govs positioned for a No. 2 seed when the OVC Tennis Championships begin, next week, in Paducah, KY. Last year, the Govs needed a season-finale win to sneak into the tournament, before losing in the quarterfinals to eventual-champion Eastern Kentucky.

The Govs hope to continue a tear through Ohio Valley Conference play where they have won four-straight matches. So far, Austin Peay’s only blemish has come at league-leader Eastern Kentucky, where the Govs lost a 5-2 match. With only the Gamecocks left for the Austin Peay, head coach Malik Tabet knows anything can happen during conference play.

Tennis Govs win second-straight OVC match

Austin Peay State University GovernorsMurray, KY – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team closed out a pivotal Ohio Valley Conference weekend with a 6-1 win at Murray State, Sunday.

It was the Govs second-straight OVC win, improving them to 5-1 in league play with one match to play until the conference tournament. Austin Peay won two doubles matches, carried the momentum into singles play and won five of six singles matches.

Tennis Govs down EIU with all-around effort

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team picked up a 6-1 against Eastern Illinois, Saturday, in Ohio Valley Conference action at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts.

The Govs won the top two doubles matches to take the point and cruised to five straight-set singles win to set the final margin. Austin Peay improves to 11-5 overall with a 4-2 OVC mark. Eastern Illinois, meanwhile, falls to 2-13 overall and 1-5 in league action.

Henrique Norbiato won his third straight match by defeating Eastern Illinois' Michael Sperry Saturday on the Austin Peay Tennis courts, Clarksville TN.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis locked up a 5-2 Ohio Valley Conference win, Thursday, against Tennessee Tech at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts.

While the sunshine made brief appearances during an otherwise gloomy day, the Govs were zoned in on all aspects. There were times when Tennessee Tech looked to get some footing, but Austin Peay managed to slam the door on every opportunity.

Important stretch begins Thursday for Govs Tennis

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – This weekend will prove to be a test of character for Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team as it plays three matches in four days, beginning with a 2:00pm, Thursday, Ohio Valley Conference match against Tennessee Tech at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts.

The Govs turn around to host Eastern Illinois 1:00pm, Saturday, before traveling to Murray State for a 1:00pm, Sunday affair. After a grueling three-month season, the Govs have only four matches remaining to challenge for their second-straight OVC Tournament appearance.
