APSU Women’s Soccer

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team suffered its first home loss, Sunday, 1-0, against Southeast Missouri in Ohio Valley Conference action.

Not only was it the the Lady Govs’ first OVC loss, it also marked the first time this season the Lady Govs were shutout.

“It’s disappointing,” head coach Kelley Guth said. “I don’t think we played our best soccer today and I think if we do that, it’s a different game. We have to learn from this. Friday nights are easy to get excited and motivated for, but we can’t afford to have a drop off come Sundays.”

VMI serves as Lady Govs soccer season-opener

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAustin Peay State University women’s soccer team opens its 2010-11 season with a 3:30pm, Friday match at Virginia Military Institute. The Lady Govs won the only prior meeting with the Keydets, 4-1, in Clarksville during the 2008 season.

Expectation-wise, the match will feature two teams with contrasting philosophies. Last season, Austin Peay struggled offensively, losing seven one-goal games, leading to a restructuring phase up front. Head coach Kelley Guth looked to answer a lot of those questions by bringing in freshmen Emily Kink and Joceline Quiceno to join the team’s returning leading goal-scorers in seniors Kellie Cannon and Monique Wong.

Lady Govs shutout Freed-Hardeman in exhibition

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAustin Peay State University women’s soccer team used a quick first-half spurt to take a 8-0 exhibition win against Freed-Hardeman, Friday night at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

Strong passing inside combined with a few well-placed serves from the midfield led to five first-half goals. The Lady Govs scored three more in the second half, including one off a corner kick.

If the first half was any indication, the Lady Govs should be expected to outperform even their own expectations. With two freshmen – Andy Quiceno and Emily Kink – flanking senior Monique Wong, Austin Peay was fluid moving the ball inside the box.

Heat an issue for Lady Govs soccer preseason

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAustin Peay State University women’s soccer team began its preseason camp, Thursday, after high temperatures kept the Lady Govs off the field for their initially planned Wednesday start.

With the heat index hovering in triple digits, head coach Kelley Guth was forced to delay the team’s first outdoor practice until early Thursday morning. More than likely, the team will continue a schedule of early morning and evening practices to protect players from the heat.

Battling the elements is only one of the many challenges that Guth’s team will be up against for the 2010 season. Depending on perception, being picked ninth in the Ohio Valley Conference’s preseason poll may also factor into the mix.
